8 Things I Wish I Knew During My Last Months As A High School Senior

As I wind down the final weeks of my freshman year of college, there are many things that I have been reflecting on from high school experience. I don't regret anything, but there are definitely certain things that I wished I had done more of or things that I am grateful that I took advantage of.

1. Actually study for AP exams.

Although your scores on these exams don't matter for getting into college anymore, there are definitely huge benefits for getting good scores. If you receive a 4 or above, it is likely to give you credit in college. This has helped me become further along credit wise as compared to my peers and fill many of the core requirements. The number of credits I came into college with technically made me a sophomore during my second semester of freshman year.

2. Build relationships with your teachers while you still can.

The relationships you make with your high school teachers are stronger than those you will make with college professors. Professors have to deal with many more students, so I find it has been harder to make strong connections. You have also probably known these teachers for longer, and you will miss them once you're gone.

3. Cherish your last moments as a high school sports player.

Whether or not you are continuing athletics in college, it will never be the same as your high school sports teams. I am not a collegiate athlete, but my friends that are tell me how different it is, and we both agree we wish we could play one more game.

4. Attend the end of the year activities.

You are not too cool for prom. Go to your senior prom or other activities the school has planned for you. You will create lasting memories there, and you only (usually) get one high school prom. There are formals in college but nothing as significant.

5. Spend quality time with your parents.

As much as you can't wait to break free from their control, you will miss having people to rely on and comfort you no matter what. It is true that you never know a good thing til it's gone (this also includes having someone do your laundry and cooking for you).

6. Play with your pets.

Unless it's a cat (JK!). Seriously though, you will miss your furry friends while away at school. My mom sends me pictures of my dogs, but it is not the same as being there with them.

7. Cherish the time left with high school friends.

If you came from a small public school like me, the kids I graduated with had known me since Kindergarten. You will make amazing friends in college, but no one will know your awkward middle school phase and still love you the same.

8. Get excited for college!

Moving to a new place can be stressful, and I know that I was very nervous about starting over again. However, relax, because everyone is in the same situation and just wants to make friends and have fun (and learn). They say college is the best years of your life for a reason, so don't be nervous and get ready for a new adventure.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
