The Last Few Days Before Classes

You are definitely not alone in procrastinating packing, and you're going to make it through.

The Last Few Days Before Classes
Alison Hebert

If any of you are anything like me, you probably didn't start thinking about packing for school until a week before you leave. And you might not have started really doing anything about it until you had three days to go.

But honestly is it the week before classes if you're not running around trying to get all of those last minute things done before the real reality hits you?

Anyway, here's the story of my last week of preparations for junior year of college.

On Friday, I celebrated my last day of my internship with my coworkers and the other intern. We talked about how the summer absolutely flew by and I got to talk to everyone about how I'm going to Thailand in January. Then the scientist I talked to most started joking about how I couldn't leave because x, y, and z thing still had to be done and then they gave me a card. This card is one of my favorite cards I have ever received. It's red with one word on the front: "Stay!" and a picture of an arm pointing at a dog. And then on the inside it say "I guess that only works on dogs." I loved it so much probably because it really showed me how much they truly appreciated my work, and that they really were sad to hear that my career path, at least in this point in time, is leading me in a different direction.

And then Saturday I finally sat down and it really sunk in that I was going to be off to college in a week and I needed to get a lot of stuff together and organized by then. So I really dig into this is how much internet will cost, this is the person I need to talk to on campus about this.

And then it was Sunday and my dad really wanted to do something with me before I left for school so we went up to the beach and had a great time! So much time in the sun that I couldn't possibly think any more about school that day after we got home.

Then Monday came and went in what seemed like the blink of an eye, while I tried to motivate myself to get things done.

Tuesday is when I really cracked down and got my internet set up for my new apartment, I got my hair done, and I went to see my grandparents for dinner. That's when my grandparents told us that their TV was currently not working and that no one could come to fix it until the next Monday.

And Wednesday was a flurry of getting the new cable box for my grandparents, going shopping at a mall and quite a few little stores in the area, and then trekking out an hour to try to get specific pieces for my futon that just wasn't wanting to work (those pieces were totally worth it, we have a couch without having to use zip ties!!). And then after dinner my dad and I had to go get my car and drive it to another servicing so that it was ready before I had to bring it back to school.

Thursday we realized that there was no HDMI cable for the cable box at my grandparents house, so I went there, fixed the cable (which was a long ordeal) and then set up their new remote, and got to play with my cousin's baby for a little while by the pool.

Friday was a lot of packing and organizing and spending time with my family for my brother's birthday, and Saturday was also a lot of packing and organizing (more than 10 hours of it).

And now it's Sunday, and I'm all moved in, and now I'm awaiting my roommate to finalize the unpacking portion!

So please believe me when I say that you are definitely not alone in procrastinating packing, and you're going to make it through, even if you're a stressed out mess trying to make sure you have absolutely everything you need (even if you do forget a thing or two).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
