Taking a language class in college can be really difficult, especially if you've never taken the language before. Here are some of the things I have experienced in my language class.
1. When it's the first day and the teacher is only speaking in the language of the class but you've only heard the language in movies.
Please introduce yourself in English or I'm going to spend majority of the semester trying to figure out your name instead of learning.
2. When people are actually replying back and it seems like they're fluent.
Wait, did they just understand what the teacher said... and then reply to them? Surely not, it's the first day and the teacher is speaking nonsense.
3. When you decide that they for sure took the class multiple times and that's how they have any idea what is going on.
Maybe you say it for comfort, maybe not, but it does make you feel like you somewhat have your life together.
4. When you have to remember to put 'the' or 'a' in front of every vocab word that you're learning.
In English you just have to know what it is, why must I put 'a' or 'the' in other languages. Don't even get me started on genders for every noun.
5. When you have to remember to put adjective AFTER the noun.
I still haven't figured out if English is the weird one or the languages I've learned.
6. The first test being next week and you still feel as though you've learned nothing.
Sure, you've been in class for two weeks, but you're still trying to figure out the teacher's name.
7. Remembering all of the conjugations and the rules of the conjugations.
Are you talking to someone in power? A friend? Multiple people of the same gender or different? You don't know, but you better figure it out because it changes the ending of the word.
8. Trying to jam grammar, over 100 vocab words and structure of sentences into your brain right before the exam.
Last minute cramming is the best, right?
9. Watching a movie in the language as the study break so that you're still 'learning' and the teacher said it would help.
You do more reading than listening so you know what's going on, but you also enjoy some movies.
10. When you have finished your test and actually felt like you knew some of it.
Now, you can relax until the next exam.
And even though the class makes you dread almost everything, you stay committed because it really will help you in the long run.
