A Kingless Queen: A Love Letter

A letter to my future black king.

A Kingless Queen: A Love Letter
The Lady's Truth

Dear Future King,

I write to you with great fears due to the abandonment that I feel by you. I can never understand why you appreciate others more than your black queen. You can attempt to fix your lips to lie and say, “I love my black women,” but do you really? You’ve sat and called these natural haired queens nappy and not beautiful, when they should be getting uplifted for having the confidence to be their true selves and not succumb to America’s beauty standard. You put us in your music videos because you think it’s something we appreciate. You think you’re doing us a favor by giving us five minutes of fame. But what we want is more than exploitation. We are more than the ass shaking, tig ‘ol bitties that we are minimized to. So no, we don’t accept your recognition. But I guess that’s just you “loving” your black women. You love us by leaving us to raise the children you helped create. You love us by yelling “Hey Ma!” on the street rather than approaching us with dignity, respect and chivalry. You love us by telling your friends that you rather have a white woman. How can you choose someone over a woman who resembles your mother, someone that’s a part of you? Someone who goes through most of the same struggles as you, your counterpart. Someone who understands your worth like no other. You’re abandoning us. Then, you turn around and respond defensively when you come across an “angry black” woman. Yes, we are angry, because we are not getting what we deserve from our black kings. So again, I fear you future king. I fear that I’ll place a crown on your head while I’m missing mine. That I’ll forever search for you and you’ll never look my way. But what if do get crowned? Now, I fear if I can trust you. Because all I have been shown by your peers is desertion. So now I ask you future king for the following: never leave my side; remain my partner for a lifetime, not just for love, not just for lust but as a companion that I can look to; a friend whom I know will show empathy because society deals us the same cards. I ask that you never say that I’m not enough, because you’re more than enough for me. Simply being the same pigment labels you as royalty in my book. This means I give you all of me with no hesitation. From my kidney, to my only heart. Simply because you deserve it. And lastly, I ask you for equality. That every sacrifice I make for you will be made by you in return. I pray that I’ll turn to you and you won’t turn away. I have already labeled you my black king, I will happily wait for my crowning.

Love, your future Queen

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
