Kesha Gets What Kesha Wants: Live In Grand Rapids, MI
Kesha

When attending a Kesha concert, it's hard to know what you're going to get. Two things are for certain though: glitter and a good time. Fresh off an intense, public legal battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke, Kesha returns to the stage with her band The Creepies to perform her hits in a new dirtier, rock-influenced way. I saw her on August 13 in Grand Rapids at the Intersection and I'm still trying to process it all.

We got to the venue about 20 minutes before the doors opened. Eager Kesha fans wrapped around the building, fully decked out in black eye-liner, fishnets and plenty of glitter to go around. I wasn't sure what to wear so I took to Facebook with the post: "What does one wear to a Kesha concert?" I received a lot of hilarious responses from my friends...

...a dress made of VHS tape...
...a trash bag...
...a glitter trash bag...
...just go naked, that ALWAYS works...

While these were all great ideas, they weren't necessarily venue appropriate; so I settled for a tee from my RSO's annual music concert Music Takes Action (represent!) and a pair of fashionable joggers. When I found out Kesha was coming to Grand Rapids and that one of my best friends was going, I impulsively bought tickets which SOLD OUT a couple weeks later.

I've started this tradition where I reward myself for surviving being in college for 7+ years by picking one big concert to go to each year. It's my way of motivating myself to keep going and after all, when's the next time you're going to see a major pop-star like KESHA for $37? I was sold.

When we got into the venue, the vibes were viberating, the booze was flowing and overall we didn't know what to expect. As the crowd started to pile in, a house DJ started playing your typical dance hits to warm people up. The venue seemed to get smaller and smaller as more people showed up to the sold out show, but I appreciated the fact that the stage was raised so us short people could still see somewhat. The DJ picked up the pace and started playing early 2000s music. The crowd started to grow closer and closer together as we reminisced over the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls. Then appropriately, the DJ switched to classic rock hits like Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" confirming the idea that pop music and classic rock music can be played in the same venue.

Then the lights went down and everybody screamed.

The Creepies entered one by one and started playing the familiar rendition of "We Are Who We Are" from the tour trailer released on Facebook with the tour dates. One of the members gave a circus-like introduction, asking us if we were ready to experience something we had never experienced before we were. Then KESHA appeared and hell broke loose as they finished out their rock cover of her own song. The crowd screamed the lyrics like it was 2011. And then Kesha spoke...

"We have gathered here tonight to bathe you in the sweet glory of rock and roll music! Are you ready!?"

"Anything that is bringing you down, or bumming you out; it has no place with us here tonight. I'm talking about rent... I'm talking about your phone bill... I'm talking about your sh--ty ex-boyfriend... I'm talking about my motherf--cking lawsuit!"

"There is no room for that sh-t inside these four walls tonight!"

For the next song, she donned an electric guitar and performed and electro-pop version of her 2010 hit "Your Love Is My Drug," complete with a flying LGBT-pride flag, bursts of glitter and a strip tease/costume change to the intro to the crowd-favorite DINOSAUR. Of course, the band members put on dinsoaur heads and syncronized their dancing to the addictive chorus.

The setlist included other famous hits such as a cover of the Britney Spears hit, that she co-wrote, "Till The World Ends", "Boots and Boys" which had never been played live before, "Cannibal" complete with glitter bass drum and the deconstructed mix of "Blow" which fans threw plastic bags of glitter during the lyrics (go insane/ go insane/ throw some glitter, make it rain) drowning the crowd in all of Kesha's glory.

Despite the rock versions of her hits, the setlist is still very danceable and enjoyable. While the setlist was shorter than expected, probably due to the lawsuit and the fact that she can't legally play her new music, she did her best to perform a great show and give the crowd what they wanted to hear.

One of the most beautiful moments of the show is when the fans started collectively screaming "FREE KESHA! FREE KESHA!" together. We were all there for one thing and one thing only: to support Kesha, no matter what condition she was in. The set ended with the inebriated "Tik Tok" in which Kesha replaced the lyrics (gonna smack em if you get to drunk) with an eager "F--CK YOU DONALD TRUMP!" and a confetti explosion from the sky.

Once the concert ended, the crowd wasn't ready for it to end. For what seemed like forever, the crowd screamed her name over and over. We waited in the dark for a good three minutes unsure of whether or not we were going to get an encore.

Then soon enough, Kesha appeared again wearing a silver cowgirl outfits. She sang three more songs: a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and "Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle To You" and ended with the country-twanged version of "Timber".

I didn't know what I was going to get myself into when going to a Kesha concert, but it was everything I expected and more. I'm still finding glitter everywhere if that tells you something. Free Kesha, indeed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
