This is not an endorsement for Donald J. Trump. This is quite the opposite. While he may have a flashy slogan, a flashy name and very enthusiastic supporters, Trump lacks the ideas and the experience to truly make America great again.
Now, this is not a liberal rant, and in fact, this is not partisan at all. Both Democrats and Republicans have expressed their discontent for Donald Trump and for good reason.
Before I go any further, I want to address the fact that I understand why people support Donald Trump. People are frustrated with the status of our political system, and they want to see change. They want to see a political establishment that validates their ideas and their beliefs, and Trump appears to be a candidate who could make such a thing possible. He's saying what a lot of people want to hear. He preaches about how ineffective our government currently is, and even I agree with that.
The problem is that people hear what they want to hear, and they fail to look at the larger picture and the rest of what Trump is saying. Yes, we need to make some drastic changes to our political system. Yes, we need to treat our veterans better and give them the help that they need and deserve. Yes, we need campaign financing reform. Corporations are not people and shouldn't be given the same rights as them, including with campaign contribution. However, just because Trump supports all of these things doesn't make him a good candidate to become the next president of the United States. Just because he speaks his mind doesn't make him a good person. In fact, if you look carefully at what he's saying, you might start to think the opposite.
Trump refuses to act and speak in a manner that is even remotely politically correct, and that appeals to a lot of people. He's often attributed as being straight-forward, blunt and honest, and people love it. But it concerns me that they love and support a man who has consistently shown blatant signs of racism and bigotry and has endorsed committing a war crime.
He calls Mexicans rapists and criminals; he wants to kill the families of terrorists; and he criticizes and verbally attacks every politician that opposes him. This is the man who's most likely to win the Republican nomination for president.
People need to wake up. His campaign is no longer cute or funny. The media obviously eat up everything he says because of the absurdity, but the problem is that people are eating it up, too.
Trump will not make America great again. He will divide us and further exploit the country. Yes, we are becoming an exhausted country and we are tired of politics as usual, but Trump is not the answer.
The people of Germany in the 1930s were exhausted and they elected a leader who promised to unite the country and lead them to great things, and he did. He also went on to spearhead one of the largest and most horrific genocides in the history of mankind. His name was Adolf Hitler.
While Hitler isn't remembered fondly in history, it should be noted that he wasn't a monster. He wasn't some cruel, malicious, abomination. He was a human being. He loved his wife, his dog, and he loved his country. Should anyone defend or excuse his actions? No, but we need to recognize that he wasn't a monster and that people are in fact capable of doing the same things that he did. We've become so blind to the idea that someone could ever do the things that Hitler did that when an orange-haired, tan-skinned "business mogul" starts preaching similar rhetoric we brush it off and fail to learn from the history that we've suffered through.
Now, clearly Donald Trump isn't actually Hitler. No. He isn't condemning Judaism and trying to spread his influence all over the world. He simply wants to ban all members of the world's second largest religion from the country and make the United States a global powerhouse (as if we weren't already).
If you're going to vote for Donald Trump, please reconsider. A vote for Donald Trump is a vote for war, racism, bigotry, anger, greed and fear.
We can make America greater than it currently is, but we don't need Donald Trump to do it.
