On March 9th, sisters around the nation celebrated their National Founder’s Day, the beginning legacy of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. as the sorority turns 20 this month. It a huge milestone as Kappa Phi Lambda is one of the youngest yet up and coming Greek organizations nationally.
20 years ago, the vision of Kappa Phi Lambda began with 7 young women interested in forming an organization to develop strong leaders based on the principles of Sisterhood, Service, and Cultural Diversity. On March 9, 1995, Elizabeth Choi, Karen Eng, Rei Hirasawa, Hee Cho Moon, Chae Yoo, Samantha Somchanchmavong, and Connie Yang founded the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Phi Lambda at Binghamton University in SUNY, New York. Since then the sorority has grown with 22 Chapters and 5 Colonies found throughout the East, Midwest, and South.
The Rho Chapter of Kappa Phi Lambda at UF is proud to be the first expansion of the South as well as the first Asian-interest sorority in the Multicultural Greek Council on campus. Rho Chapter was established on the University of Florida on April 3, 2004. While Kappa Phi Lambda is an Asian-interest Greek-lettered organization, they are certainly not Asian-exclusive and welcomes girls of all cultural backgrounds as Kappa Phi Lambda also embodies the pillar of Cultural Diversity.
President of Kappa Phi Lambda at UF, Alexis Galamay, adds, “20 years is an amazing accomplishment, and I’m so proud to say that each sister I’ve encountered embodies the values our Founding Mothers set forth for us. I’m also very excited for the community to see all the passion and hardwork my sisters have put into our events for Spirit of the Phoenix.”
For their Founder’s Week, these ladies are hosting their annual Spirit of the Phoenix events, so be sure to come support and help them celebrate their achievements. Their events include a cohosted workshop with APIA called “Create Your Voice”, “Dance Around the World,” a cultural dance workshop in partnership with UF Garba team and CASA (Chinese American Student Association), as well as an interactive tabling event “Keep Girls in the Picture.” Cultural Chair, Shreya Nirmalan, comments on the upcoming events, “I hope people can come to these events, have fun, and learn about different ways that they can find their voice and use it to make a difference!”
In addition to these events to come, stop by Turlington this week on Thursday to watch their special Founder’s Day performance to learn more about the history and traditions of their sorority. Come enjoy a slice of cake afterwards in celebration of 20 great years and more. Don’t miss these ladies in scarlet red, white, and heather grey this Thursday 12:35 P.M. Turlington.
Congratulations again to the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda for achieving 20!
