The other day, I received a Snapchat from my sorority sisters while I was home for the weekend. It was a video of a few of my friends yelling my name and saying that they missed me. My mom just so happened to be in the room and overheard it. When I told her that it was from my sorority sisters she smiled and told me, "Joining that sorority was one of the best decisions that you made in college. I'm so glad that you did it."
I had never seen myself as someone who would be in a sorority before I went through recruitment. But when I got to college I was struck by something that I was unaccustomed to: loneliness. I hung out with my roommate, and I had a few friends, but I couldn't help but feel a pang of envy every time I saw large groups of people walking across campus together. I knew that Greek Life at my school was pretty inclusive, and overall had a pretty positive influence on campus, so I decided to check it out. I remember thinking that if I hated recruitment, I could always drop out. I strongly considered transferring if things didn't go well.
But they did go well. I found a home in Kappa Delta, and I have loved it ever since. Since I joined Kappa Delta, I have found lifelong sisterhood in the women that I have met. I have had sisters sit with me until 2:00 a.m. encouraging me while I finished homework. I've walked into my sisters rooms actually sobbing before and had instant support. I've had sisters there to run and get food from our favorite restaurant with me multiple times. Basically, for anything that I needed, I had a sister there to help me.
I love my sisters, and I love what our organization stands for. Our vision is to provide opportunities and experiences that inspire women to greatness. Kappa Delta wants to help all girls realize their true potential and values. We work one on one with Girl Scouts to help them build their confidence and to show them what it's like to be a woman in college. Since I joined last year, I have become more confident in myself and my capabilities. I never would have had the courage to change my major and follow my dreams had it not been for Kappa Delta.
Later this week, I will be getting a little sister, and I could not be more ecstatic. I have so much love for KD and I'm so excited to share it with her. Last year, when I got my big sister, I knew that my place had been found. I just have to add the finishing touches on some of my crafts, and I'll be ready to welcome her into my family. I know that she is going to grow so much in Kappa Delta, and I'm going to continue to grow with her.
College would not have been an adventure without Kappa Delta. My life would be dull without it. I can't imagine not being woken up from the middle of a nap so that I can get a milkshake, or getting so lost on the way to McDonald's that you actually think that you may have entered another state.
My mom was right, joining this sorority truly has been one of the greatest decisions that I have made in college.
