What's this? Justin Bieber came out with an album that I can't help but play on repeat? I never thought I would write about the teen pop sensation from years ago, but yet here we are playing "Sorry" on the radio and loving it! As a music enthusiast, I'm really interested in new music, which made me intrigued by Justin's new album.
What's made this new album so noticeable? Justin’s new music has the same catchy lyrical content, but it contains motivation, self-appreciation and, like his album title states,“Purpose”. From the teenager who had no tattoos, dated Selena Gomez and had a rebellious phase, Beiber has transformed into a singer who promotes a positive mental ideology. It’s seen as a pattern within artists who seem so innocent at the beginning of their career to go through some mental breakdown, but rise above it with an amazing album or new outlook on life.
His music promotes positivity just by looking at his song titles. Songs such as, “Love Yourself,” “Life Is Worth Living,” “Children” and many more send positive messages. Granted, there are a few generic pop songs that are purely popular for their catchy beats, but the album as a whole is worthy playing on repeat. Left alone, his songs are amazing, but what made me truly interested me in Justin’s new album are his music videos. There is phenomenal choreography that captures my attention in many videos. The dances and the way that they are presented created a theatrical and extremely relatable moment between the viewer and the video. The amount of energy and sharp movements where the message was overpowering created a sense of intensity and power, and then slow complex movements created a sense of somber and appreciation.
Justin reached out to a few phenomenal dance crews. In many of them, such as “Sorry”, there’s a mix of dance crews from New Zealand called Ladies of ReQuest and Royal Dance Crews. They are a very diverse dance crew with women of all shapes and sizes with long hair, short hair, or no hair at all. By using these dance crews, and others, Justin is breaking the stereotype of the typical women dancers who would most likely be back-up dancers: all be a size two, wear almost no clothes, and just make “the guy” look good. Justin shatters that stereotype by incorporating these women into his music videos.
So how should we view Justin today? Well, take the teenage boy with the “Bieber flow” hairstyle, then look at Justin’s teenage rebellious phase which the media fed off of such as the viral video of Justin “Peeing into a janitor bucket” and the “Bieber Roast,” and compare it all to who he has become today. He is an artist who has seemingly grown to appreciate a lot more than he did before. What has really personified Justin as humble is a viral video, usually with the caption, “Now this is how you should treat your ex”. The video is of Justin confessing his love for Selena hasn’t died, and he still cares for her after all of this time, so they keep in touch.
Although Justin Bieber is a different person today than he was 5 years ago, you could argue if it is a good or bad change. From my perspective, I truly appreciate the passion and content of his works which sends positive energy to his audiences.
