There is so much hype that surrounds the birthday that everyone looks forward to and that is turning 21. You grow up with your parents always hounding you to wait until you're 21 to drink, but clearly that doesn't work because high school and college parties exist. But you see the movies where its the one night you will never remember with the friends you will never forget. The main goal seems to be to get black out drunk because you've probably never done that before, which, in all honesty, we know is a lie. You can finally buy the drinks and the birthday money is coming in clutch, so you can buy as much alcohol as you could ever use. You usually go to some place that you weren't allowed to go to before like the casino or a club. The possibilities for your 21st birthday are endless and you've been dreaming of this day since your first sip of alcohol.
Well, I recently celebrated my 21st birthday and, honestly, it wasn't anything like the movies or like you've heard it would be. I didn't get black out drunk because not all birthdays happen to fall on the weekend and you can't spend the entire night at the bar. I had to be at the gym at 6 the next morning, so staying out all night did not seem super practical. I didn't go to the bar because, realistically, college students don't have money to blow at the bar because we can't even afford dinner. I ordered one of my favorite drinks, I had my roommates and boyfriend with me, and great vibes surrounded me. We listened to music and they made me dessert. It was a chill and enjoyable night that I know I will always remember.
The hype is built up for so many years and when the day finally comes you don't feel any different. You can continue doing the thing you have done for so long without having to ask someone else to purchase it for you. You wake up feeling the same way you felt the day before, just as you do on every other birthday. The hype of turning 21 should be laid to rest, because the day is what you make of it. If you spent it with someone you care about and were surrounded by friends who love you then why would you want to not remember such a milestone in your life. Turning 21 is just another day of your life, so make it one to remember for a lifetime.
