21 Thoughts You Have Leading Up To Your 21st Birthday

I think it is pretty safe to say that everyone looks forward to their birthday. I mean, come on, a day completely dedicated to celebrating the birth of yourself? A day where you are spoiled with love and presents by those close to you, and even strangers. Not to mention those heartfelt Instagram posts about how much you mean to your friends. It is just a great day all around.

I think that it is also safe to say that out of all the birthdays one will turn, the most anticipated age is 21. Why? Because this is the age where you can finally, legally, drink alcohol.

When you turn 16, you can legally drive. When you turn 18, you can legally vote and buy tobacco. All of that is cool and all, but nothing compares to when you turn 21 and being able to legally buy and consume alcohol.

Maybe it's the media that has made it so prestigious, or maybe it's just how everyone has talked about it. Personally, however, I think that the real reason that turning 21 is so monumental is because, for our whole lives, we have always been told "no" when it comes to drinking.

The year in between 20 and 21 is sweet torture, but the few weeks leading up to the actual day is an emotional roller coaster like you've never experienced. Here are 21 thoughts you have leading up to your 21st birthday:

1. You just turned 20, and now you have to play the waiting game. 364 days should go by fast, right?

2. When in fact, time isn't moving fast enough.

3. A lot of your friends start to turn 21, and you have to pretend you don't hate your life.

4. And then they all start to leave the frats early and go to the bars without you.

5. Your birthday is in a few weeks now, and you have to figure out what to wear.

6. And then you find the perfect, over-the-top sparkly 21-run dress, and it gets you even more excited.

7. So, you start to plan your 21-run with your friends and think about how crazy it is going to be.

8. And your friends start reminiscing on all of your "one-too-many" nights and you pretend you don't like it.

9. But then that one friend threatens to bring up that one photo of you that she promised never to share.

10. And then all of your friends start saying which videos/pictures they are going to post on your 21-run page and you're like:

11. And then you start to rethink your entire existence and ask yourself why you chose to be this human.

12. But then you remember just how awesome you actually are.

13. This is your reaction when you realize you turn 21 in exactly a week:

14. But then you look at your bank account.

15. But then you remember you're turning 21, so who cares?

16. Your birthday is so close that you can't help but remind everyone that you're almost 21.

17. Everyone's asking if you're excited, and you try to play it cool like:

18. But on the inside, you're actually like:

19. It is almost midnight, which means the day you have been waiting 21 years for is about to begin.

20. The clock strikes midnight. Oh my god it's here. You're finally 21.

21. You wake up the next morning, and you have never felt more dead inside.

22. Now all you have to do is wait until the rest of your friends turn 21, and then you can all legally be the sh*t shows you have always been.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
