On Wednesday night, just two days before the much anticipated UFC 200, Dana White announced that the United States Anti-Doping Agency had discovered a performance-enhancing substance in Jon Jones' sample that was taken on June 16.
The former champion was quickly released from the fight card and White was forced to hold a spontaneous news conference to announce this change to the event.
During this time an emotional Jon Jones also expressed his sincerest apologies to his opponent Daniel Cormier, while also denying any knowledge of having consumed illegal substances.
Jones told the media, "I have no clue what it [the banned substance] is. I don't even know how to pronounce it. I've been taking the same supplements the majority of my career. Being labeled as someone who would ever cheat, it hurts me more than anything else in my career."
After defeating Daniel Cormier in 2015, the USADA announced that Jones had cocaine in his sample prior to the fight. Jones continued his downward spiral three months later when he was involved in a hit-and-run crash which left a pregnant woman injured. It was later reported that officers found drug paraphernalia at the scene of the crime.
Despite his promises of returning to the UFC with a whole new outlook and ambition, it appears that Jones cannot seem to escape the usage of illegal substances.
According to the USADA regulations, Jones can potentially face a two-year suspension.
It is thoroughly saddening to see a former champion, and all around talented athlete, who many considered to be the best in the world, be the cause of his own downfall.
Essentially, it is fighters like Jon Jones that are ruining mixed martial arts.
Not only does Jones' actions show that he cares little about Cormier's needs to financially support his family, the former also appears completely disinterested about the thousands of fans who made their way to Las Vegas to watch him compete.
With so many positive drug testings in such a short span of time, hopefully fans can realize how deeply entrenched performance-enhancing drugs are in MMA, and the dangers that fighters who do not take these substances face while being in the octagon with these opponents.
