I plan on studying abroad in the Japan in the summer. Going is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so it's important to make the most of it. It's good to make a list of goals, so you don't waste your free afternoons.

1. Enjoy the many flavors of Kit-Kats

Japan loves Kit-Kats. They have over 200+ flavors.

2. Eat Ramen

Do I really need to say more?

3. Visit The Kamen Rider Cafe

Japan, Tokyo particularly, has a lot of themed cafes. As a fan of the franchise, this is at the top of my list.

4. Visit Akihabara

Akihabara is a neighborhood in Tokyo. It is the technology-pop culture hub of Japan. If this is your interest in Japan, then this is your paradise.

5. Stay in a Capsule Hotel

The future is now. These modular accommodations are ideal for budget traveller. If you aren't studying in the big city and don't want to spend an arm and a legging getting that experience, this could be perfect for you.

6. Visit a Tokusatsu filming location

If you were an observant kid, you probably noticed Power Rangers battled monsters in a lot of the same locations. In Japan, you can visit some of these locations and recreate a part of your childhood.

7. Catch A Kabutomushi

If you're studying abroad in the summer for a short period of time, a kabutomushi (rhinoceros beetle) can be an ideal pet for you. Japanese boys collect these in the summer, and release them before school starts (or they die, as they have a two month lifespan).

8. Visit Toei Studio Park

This is popular Japanese theme park. If you enjoy Japanese film or any Toei franchises, this is a great weekend destination!

9. Go to Tamahide Oyakodon

Oyakodon is classic Japanese comfort food. Tamahide is the oldest Oyakodon restaurant in the country, passed down from generation to generation. There is always a line out the door.

10. Go to one of Tokyo’s 300 Gay Bars

The LGBTQ experience is different than it is in America. This could be for you if you're looking for community of people similar to you, or just want to party.

11. See Mt. Fuji

Just stunning.

12. Visit an Onsen

Olsen are traditional Japanese hot springs. However, if you have tattoos, you may need to cover them up, as tattoos are associated with gang activity.

13. Visit A Shrine

Shrine have some of the most stunning architecture in country. You can go to pray for good luck on your exams!

14. Experience The Religion

Japan has two man religions: Shintoism and Buddhism. It's good not only study and experience these religions, but think about how it affects the mindset of Japanese society.

15. Eat at a Food Stall

The best place to get late night ramen.

16. Visit an Animal Cafe

Though they are rare, like America, Japan has animal cafes!

17. Enjoy a legal drink

If you're not 21, you can enjoy a legal drink at 20!

20. Rent a Bike

Unlike America, Japan is very cyclist friendly! This is an amazing way to take in the scenery, and experience the city you're living in.

21. Get Food at Seven Eleven

Even the gas station food in Japan is infinitely better. You can get a decent, cheap bento box, and tons of flavors of ongiri!

22. Go to An Arcade

Unfortunately, arcades are declining in America. However, they're easy to find in Japan. You can play a lot of your Nintendo and Sony favorites, or check out some bizarre Japanese originals.

23. Get A Good Picture of Tokyo

Tokyo has so many tall towers, and amazing views. Make sure to snap a pic of Tokyo Tower to let your friends know you made it. Realize how big Tokyo really is and contemplate your miniscule existence.

24.Go to Takeshitadori

If you're confused, good. Kagaya is a bar in Tokyo, and the performance is better than hibachi.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
