What are you grateful for?
With Thanksgiving two days away, I thought it was the perfect time to reflect on the good and bad of my life. A lot of people make their list of what they try to accomplish for the upcoming year on New Year’s, but I like to make mine right around Thanksgiving. Though many may argue Thanksgiving is just a holiday to spend money, because you should be giving thanks everyday, I think it’s important to devote a full day to the people you love, and care about. Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday, not because of all the delicious food, which is a huge part of it, but because I love when everyone is able to come together and just enjoy a meal together.
There are so many things we take advantage of- I know I do for sure. Some may seem so ridiculous, but compared to the rest of the world, we may look like Kim Kardashians. Some basic privileges we have which we might not fully appreciate are:
1. Food.
This is one of the biggest things we should be thankful for. Yes, food is a necessity, but we have so much availability of it, it’s crazy! I know when I see those commercials of kids in foreign countries literally starving, it’s like I’m hit with a brick! Most likely every other, if not single block in major cities such as New York, has fast food joints or restaurants located strategically to allure you in. Even on our campus, we have such a wide variety around us, a major decision we make is deciding where we want to eat.
2. Having a wide variety of clothes.
My parents are both immigrants from Guyana, and they both came from very poor families. My dad only owned one pair of sandals when he was growing up, and after he grew out of them, they were passed on. When we go to the mall, and buy a new shirt, or several pairs of shoes, we don’t realize they aren’t necessities however cute or fashionable they may be.
3. Education.
I know many people may think- really? Education? But the truth is yes! Congrats to you for taking the time, and putting in the effort to try and secure a better future for yourself! There are still many places around the world, that don’t offer this opportunity for students.
4. Family.
Though this seems like an obvious one, just remember to hold on tight to the ones you love. It’s definitely a privilege to go home to parents who care for you, and siblings you annoy you. This is your first support system, and may be the truest, so don’t let them slip away.
Here is just a few of the most basic things we have should be grateful for, and the list can definitely extend on. This Thanksgiving, while stuffing your face with turkey, just take the time to look around the table, and acknowledge how blessed you are.
