It's Time For The Millennials To Take A Stance

First and foremost, I would like to say that this article is simply to encourage my peers on campuses across our state and country to vote this year.

With the presidential election now in full swing, I have come to the realization that college students, or the millennial population, will play a pivotal and crucial role in setting a path for our country and democracy.

Is it time for change in American politics? Early primary results show a desire to break from the expected.

This election has shown nothing but diversity among candidates. Leaders in the strive for change include Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, who tend to challenge the status quo in one way or another in a majority of what they do. Not to mention that the first female president might be elected right before our eyes.

Trump is leading all Republican candidates through a self-funded campaign that has deviated from all traditional campaigns. This departure from traditional practices has resonated with disenfranchised voters, making him the top runner that he is today.

The Democratic Party also has a candidate trying to take on Washington. Bernie Sanders has called himself a socialist and challenges Hilary Clinton in the Democratic race. Many college aged voters are providing a substantial amount of support which is greatly influencing the race, but will it be enough?

The success of these two campaigns is evidence in itself that the American public wants something new.

As millennials, we are the future of the United States of America. Many major issues are up for debate during this election. Issues such as student debt, social security, Wall Street regulations, taxes and critical social supports depend on the outcome of this election and will influence our generation for years to come.

Many experts believe that voters are responding to a perceived need for dramatic political change. "Business as usual" is no longer acceptable for these voters.

Views become polarizing where there is little room for middle ground. When it comes to political debate, the intense variation of opinions has limited progress by our government through lack of compromise.

With socialism on the horizon under Bernie Sanders, and the extremely unique stances of Donald Trump, voters are drawn to the anti-establishment promises of the two candidates. This extremism seems to make Sanders and Trump symbols for change in the United States. But, as a millennial, ask yourself, is this the right change?

Since there's so much at stake, I want to emphasize the importance of voting. Getting involved now, when changes are so potentially dramatic, will have lasting effects that we will either appreciate or regret in our futures.

As young people, we can sometimes feel neglected or denied from having a voice when it comes to politics. Although we take advantage of powerful social media platforms and campus gatherings to speak our minds, are we really being heard?

Voting is the chance for millennials to take a stance. Elections are our chance to influence and take control of the future of our country, and this one in particular is going to be crucial in our constantly evolving world.

So, as a millennial with a point of view, I ask that you take a stand as well. Voting is our time to be heard, and the time is now.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
