When I read tweets similar to, “With expectations comes disappointments,” it makes me think an extra second longer because I do, indeed, have expectations. I have expectations because I have respect for myself and the people I am surrounded with. In every relationship and friendship I’ve ever been in, I have had things I wanted and hoped for, whether it’s a thoughtful text on an important day or a special happy birthday post.
There’s a few things to know about having expectations:
Expecting things from people does not make you weak, spoiled or seem ungrateful. Wanting to be treated like you are important, whether it’s being complimented or given “little things” mementos, is not a crime. Everyone loves a dosage of attention here and there, no matter big or small.
While wanting certain things, you need to manage these hopes and wants, as you must keep reality at a close reach. Waiting for flowers and candy from your significant other might not happen everyday, but keeping the hope that you'll get a meaningful gift on holidays or your birthday is a safe bet. Keep these wishes realistic and let it be known how much appreciation you hold for these gestures.
What you wish for reflects you as a person, which is what sets you and I apart. Maybe you have been let down by the same person repeatedly or perhaps you don’t feel like you are worthy of any type of attention. Those feelings are shown among the better majority of us humans, but I think that having hopes gives you something to look forward to.
If you don’t receive what you wanted, then take a deep breath and move on. Life is not butterflies and rainbows 100% of the time.
Waiting for something that might not come can be a foundation for being let down, but taking risks on love and friendship is a fulfillment that one can’t explain fully. If you have no expectations then yes, you will not be let down or disappointed. But being let down is a part of life, so fall, stumble, and crash to the ground, but don’t be afraid to want positive things for yourself and your surroundings.
