Being an adult is hard and scary at times, especially when you're trying to juggle being a full-time student, a job and a social life. A lot of people will make you feel like you're supposed to have your life planned out in your early twenties but I honestly don't think that's true. I certainly don't have my life planned out, I'm still struggling with what I want to do with my $100,000 degree. I love my major but do I see myself having a stable future in the world of production? No.
I put myself out there when I decided to move to New York City and it isn't working out as well as I had planned and that is extremely disappointing to myself. People tell me that I'm crazy for not wanting to stay in NY but all I know is that I'm not happy and I can't focus or work to my fullest potential while I'm unhappy. Education is obviously important and I want my degree more than anything but I just feel so lost sometimes. Everyone around me knows exactly what they want to do and are excelling with their lives and there's me, binge watching "One Tree Hill" in my dorm room for weeks straight.
I feel like a failure and disappointment to my family all the time even though they reassure me that I'm not. There are all sorts of pressures to make a decision about my future but the last thing I want to do is settle and become resentful. It's hard to talk to my friends about my feelings because most of them are already "adulting" or at least have an idea of what they want to do with their lives and can't relate.
I don't understand why we're told that we need to have it all figured out at such young ages. In your early twenties, you're still discovering what your passions are and growing as a person. The whole world is in front of you for the taking but you're being told that you can't discover, you need a solid plan for your future and it's wrong to stray from said plan. People make mistakes, it's human nature, especially at such a pivotal growing point in your life.
Don't listen to the voices that are forcing you to do something or be someone that you aren't completely happy with. It's your life and if there's anything I've learned while entering the adult world it's that your happiness is key and should be your first priority. No one can make life decisions for you, follow your heart, mind, soul whatever you feel is right for you. Tune out the negativity because no one knows what's best for you but yourself. You don't have to have it all figured out in your twenties, it's okay.
