While attending Florida State University, I've learned that there are some people who just seem to do it all. These people can be involved in several clubs, still make decent grades, and maintain a social life while also making it all look easy. In life, there are always legends. Florida State University has had the pleasure of seeing many legends, including Bobby Bowden, John Thrasher, Mrs. Killings, Jameis Winston, Jake Owen, and well, Mitchell Geezil.
If you have spent time on our wonderful campus or spent time on Twitter, it is likely that you have come across Mitchell. From Homecoming to Dance Marathon, to Student Government, to Greek Life, Mitchell pretty much does it all. As not only a member of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity but practically an honorary member of every Panhellenic sorority on campus, Mitchell seems to be the man everyone knows. With his many different activities and dedication to Florida State's campus and its people, Mitchell Geezil seems to be Mr. Florida State University.
Although Mitchell fits right in at Florida State, college wasn't always on Mitchell's radar. Mitchell described his path to FSU as one he "Never really [expected] to embark on." He soon realized that Florida State was filled with "Compassion, ambition, promise, and family," something that isn't easy to turn down. Mitchell would argue that his favorite Florida State memory was being accepted, "Not only because the feeling was indescribable, but also because from that point the opportunities felt limitless." Now a senior in college, Mitchell has certainly lived his life at Florida State to the fullest. Mitchell is an International Affairs major who seems to enjoy keeping a full plate and his resume loaded. Mitchell always has a smile on his face, even when he hasn't slept in several days. He is always willing to help out and get involved and that is what makes him such an amazing student and friend. It would be easy to argue that Mitchell doesn't know any strangers.
While Mitchell does enjoy kicking up his heels and having a good time, he also understands the importance and the impact that Florida State University has on Children's Miracle Network. Mitchell is extremely For The Kids and his love and compassion for the cause is not only inspiring but also contagious. Some could say he's even a little nuts.
Mitchell started his Dance Marathon career as a volunteer his freshman year. Although his shift was only four hours long, Mitchell ended up staying for eight hours because he was so "moved by the atmosphere" and through listening to life stories and experiencing the energy and high morale, Mitchell felt changed. His passion for Dance Marathon led him to be a Morale Captain for the last two years and he hopes to do the same this up-coming year. During the 2015-2016 fundraising period for Dance Marathon, Mitchell raised $3,123 For The Kids. Mitchell has put in countless hours of work and dedication to this cause and is extremely passionate about what he does. He shaved his head two years ago as a fundraising opportunity and this year bought a squirrel costume to wear on campus if he met his fundraising goal. Not the mention that it's July 2016 and he's already started fundraising for Dance Marathon in 2017.
Along with his involvement in ZBT, Mitchell has also found a passion for the Panhellenic community. Mitchell holds a high respect for what Panhellenic stands for and argues that “Panhellenic at FSU fosters an environment of positive growth that is immensely supportive of its members”. While Mitchell is a proud member of IFC, he believes that "other organizations should aspire to be as influential and motivating as the women of Panhellenic.” Mitchell can be found supporting many different Panhellenic groups through attending events and participating in philanthropies. Last year Mitchell participated in Kappa Delta’s “Bump It Like Beckham” soccer tournament that benefited Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). Mitchell also participated in Phi Mu’s first ever “Miracle Man Competition” which would benefit Children’s Miracle Network. And although his application was denied, Mitchell was the first person to turn in an application to be a Recruitment Counselor for the 2016 Panhellenic formal recruitment. Best of luck next year, Mitchell!
Somehow, Mitchell also finds the time to work on campus as a lifeguard at the Florida State Reservation and at the school's on-campus gym, The Leach. Maybe one day he will get the hang of it.
Although Mitchell would probably blush and deny it, his drive and passion for his school make him the kind of student, friend, and pier that Florida State needs, admires, and loves. While we all give him a hard time, Mitchell's ability to have fun, stay involved, and also keep his sanity is something that we all admire. Mitchell's drive and enthusiasm are something to envy and strive for and it is clear that Mitchell can accomplish whatever he puts his mind to. His advice to any student looking to get involved is that they should "Step out of their comfort zone, apply for different campus positions, find something they love and run with it."
Mitchell believes that it is important to have an answer to Why? because "People will recognize true spirit and ambition." The legacy that Mitchell hopes to leave is one that would "Make someone feel included, happy, and loved" because "everyone deserves to be loved and be loved by the FSU community just as much as he was." While Mitchell is known for being an incredibly well-balanced, motivated goofball, I can say from experience that he has touched the hearts of so many Florida State students and has motivated them to get involved with their passions. Florida State is proud to have a man like Mitchell. There is no doubt that Mitchell can do amazing things. And that is why Mitchell Geezil is Mr. FSU.
