An open letter to the girl, who is still friends with her ex-boyfriend,
I know that all of your friends are telling you to stop talking to him and forget that he even exists. They don’t realize how hard that can be. Kicking someone out of your life completely when they, at one point, meant so much to you is one of the most difficult things in the world. You don’t have to kick him out of your life completely though, despite what your friends tell you, it is perfectly acceptable to be friends with your ex-boyfriend. This being said you most certainly should proceed with caution because even though it is alright you don’t want to develop feelings again or hurt yourself in the long run. What your friends don’t realize about an ex-boyfriend is that the two of you dated once and were extremely close and so, in some cases, this boy may know you better than you know yourself. I’m sure you told him things even your friends don’t know and that he knows things about you that even you yourself haven’t figured out yet. You trust him because at one point in time he was your go to when you were sad, angry, happy, or just wanted someone to be with. He has seen you at your worst and been there to witness you at your best. I know that your friends have always been there for you as well, but we both know that it is different with someone that you were once in love with and who was once in love with you. Being friends with your ex-boyfriend is fine as long as you feel confident enough in yourself to not get hurt and you trust him to be a good friend and be there when you actually need him. He may not always be there in person as there is always that slight tension and awkwardness between exes, but if he truly loved you once and it was an amicable break up he will be there for you when you need him and maybe even when you least expect it. Go ahead and be friends with him and forget what your friends say because even though they are just looking out for your best interest, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands and ignore what they have to say.
Sincerely,
A girl who is still friends with her ex-boyfriend
