Do you ever wonder what it's like to be a grandparent? I wonder about the lives they led before us grand kids were born, their reactions to when they learned they were going to be a grandparent, and many other questions that only a grandparent could answer. Here is a short interview of one of my many grandparents.
1. When were you born?
I was born in the 60s.
2. What was it like growing up where you lived?
It
was good. I got to run and play. I didn't have to worry about curfews. I
only had black and white TVs. We played board games, rode our
bicycles, played cowboys and Indians, and made our own bows and arrows. I
didn't have any sisters, so I mostly played trucks and cars.
3. What was high school like for you?
It was a public school. It was fun, but I didn't really have any close friends. I didn't get to do any after-school activities because I had a single mom. I didn't have to really worry about bullying because my principal was really strict. I did get two boys suspended one time because they harassed me. Girls at my high school could not wear short skirts and your shirts couldn't expose your back or chest. We couldn't wear hip-huggers and the girls were not allowed to wear jeans. The boys were not allowed to have long hair. The principal and the coaches were allowed to use a paddle on you.
4. What was your wedding like?
I was living in Tennessee, where I met my husband to be, and we went back to my home state to get married. None of my husband's family attended the wedding. I borrowed my cousin's wedding dress and got married at my aunt's house. It was nice and I got married the same place my parent's did. We didn't go on a honeymoon, but we did stay at a hotel that night. We got up the next day and came back home.
5. What was your reaction to learning you were going to have a baby and what were the names you liked?
I was scared and excited. I know if we had said it was a boy that we would name him Phillip. If it was a girl it would be Kelly, after Kelly Garrett from "Charlie's Angles." Even though when I asked during labor if my baby was OK and the nurse kept saying, "he's fine," he was actually a she, so her name was Kelly.
6. You have three children total, what was your reaction to them having children of their own? To becoming a grandparent?
I was excited that they were having children and because they were already mature enough to handle having a child. I loved the idea of becoming a grandparent.
7. What is the hardest thing about being a grandparent?
The hardest part is not living close enough to them to see them every day.
8. What is the best thing about being a grandparent?
When you
can send them home. Haha, no, it's when you can sit and see parts of
your child in them. You see things that you taught your child to do,
that they taught my grandchildren to do. I like that my grandchildren
think I'm cool and tell other people that. It's also awesome to watch your grandkids accomplish things.
