If we learned anything from last Sunday's Oscars, it's that international films are as good if not better than films in English. We won't let subtitles keep us from these superb pieces of art. Here's some film recommendations to get you started on your journey.

Parasite (2019)

imdb

Even without the acclaim of winning 4 Oscars including Best Picture, I would still recommend Parasite as a must watch masterpiece. The film is a psychological thriller about an impoverished family that cons there way into the household of an elite Korean family. Everything from the production design to the cinematography, to the score, to the plot and social commentary is nothing short of exquisite. I highly suggest you watch this while it's still in theatres.

Roma (2018)

imdb

Roma, directed by Alfonso Curon, is another breathtaking film. The somewhat autobiographical film taps into the essence of mexican family life in the 1970s. Cuaron immerses the viewer into the world with his long shots and character perspective. This film is easy to watch and doesn't tell you how to feel. At the same time, it also makes you think and reflect. If you want something beautiful to watch, stream Roma on Netflix.

Spirited Away (2001)

imdb

Although I'd recommend any of Studio Ghibli's films, Spirited Away is one of my favorites. The film is about a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro who has to work at a supernatural resort in order to save herself and her parents. This movie represents childhood, growing up, and selflessness in a beautiful, entertaining way. The animation and characters are amazing. I never grow tired of watching this movie and I think you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

Life is Beautiful (1997)

imdb

Life is Beautiful is not your typical holocaust movie. It's a love and family story that will make you smile as much as it will make you cry. Roberto Benigni plays a Jewish-Italian writer named Guido who wins the affections of a school teacher. They marry and have a son named Giosue together, but the family gets separated when sent to a concentration camp. Throughout their time in the camp, Guido convinces his son that they are merely in a game. Although the movie is a bit heartbreaking, it is extremely endearing and well executed.

In the Mood for Love (2000)

imdb

In the Mood for Love, is a classic brought to us by the director Wong Kar-wai. This movie is very interesting to watch because the story and concept changed several times during the filmmaking process. As a result, we ended up with a genuine journey that follows a form similar to a collection of short stories. As the title suggests, the movie is a love story, but the approach is unconventional, unique, and very entertaining. I would definitely watch if you are in the mood for some love.

My Life as a Zucchini (2016)

imdb

My Life as a Zucchini will break your heart and put it back together. This film touches on the innocence and resilience of children who are faced with the adversity of broken homes and life in the foster care system. Although the film touches on a heavy subject, it still manages to have light and fun moments. The claymation that adds unique visuals and perspective. I would definitely watch it again.

Shoplifters (2018)

imdb

Shoplifters is a visually exceptional piece that touches on poverty and classism in Japan. It is about a father who takes home a young girl he finds on the street and their struggles of making ends meet. The film touches on the humanity of connection, family, and what it means to belong. It will move you but in ways you won't expect. Prepared to be in awe after watching.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
