Instagram Is Not Stupid

Perfecting your feed is more than a waste of time.

Instagram Is Not Stupid
Hunter Merck

I am completely consumed by my phone about 90 percent of my waking hours. I am sure that most people who are around my age, or have similar interests, will say the same.

What am I doing on my phone all the time, you ask? Well, I pretty much just stay on social media.

I take Twitter as a joke the majority of the time and just post whatever I'm thinking. However, Instagram is a totally different story. I am very strategic about the photos that I post, the time of day I post, and how often I post, among other factors.

If you ask a majority of people, they post what they want, when they want, however often they want. Then there are the people, like myself, who are very selective about everything that goes into their online profile. The majority thinks it is stupid to spend a lot of time to "perfect" a specific social media platform -- I mean, it is only social media, right? Wrong.

To a lot of people, Instagram is art. My friends and I will go out specifically to take pictures to post. My mom and other adults her age don't understand -- they think it wastes too much time, or it's not worth the effort.

They all think we spend too much time on our phones.

I have never been good at art in the traditional sense -- I cannot paint, I cannot draw, and I'm terrible at sculpting clay. ButI have found a love for taking pictures. Even though I only post a couple of pictures from each trip, I still enjoy every step of the process.

I have fun scouting out photo locations. Being silly with my friends while "posing" and trying to create candids brings me so much joy. Sitting down to go through the pictures and seeing what we actually shot is fun. I love looking at the different faces we make and the poses we come up with. It is such a bonding time with my friends and it is free entertainment. Plus, it gets me outside.

I use a real camera, so I'm not even on my phone for most of it. I can also use the pictures I take as an opportunity to build my portfolio. I also genuinely enjoy editing. Sometimes the lighting in a pictures turns out wrong or the coloring is off, but editing can make a picture go from OK to awesome. Watching the transformation in front of me is so fun. Captions are the opportunity to be silly, or serious.

It can really be whatever you want it to be.

I think part of the reason people don't understand is because they don't know how to do it. People tell me all the time that they love my Instagram pictures, or that they want me to help them with their pictures. It's something that I enjoy, so I don't feel like it's wasting my time. I do the best I can and I love creating pictures to post and love seeing the reactions that my peers and others have from them.

I'm not trying to make my life seem cooler than it actually is. I am only trying to create my own art.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
