Insomnia affects more people than you know, especially kids in college, or young adolescents. Now, there is a difference from just the regular college kid who stays up all night to hang out with friends or even party. In my case, it involves a lot of sleepless nights, racing thoughts, and the ultimate goal to achieve sleep at a decent hour. It is the most undesirable disorder that can really make a regular life difficult.
It gets really old night after night as you stare at the same spot on your ceiling. You know you want to sleep, and you know you need sleep but there is no possible way. It is just not happening no matter how long you keep your eyes closed. It doesn't matter how many sheep you count or the drugs you take, such as Melatonin.
None of it works, you find yourself drained and exhausted by 6 am. The clock pretends like it is moving as it slowly ticks and ticks as the little hand moves around in a circle. It's like time stand still and 5 minutes actually feels like hours.
When 6 a.m. rolls around you've completely cleaned your room, watched an entire season of your favorite show on Netflix, Snapchatted all of your friends until they are sick of your face and even paced your hallway several times. There is absolutely nothing to do around a campus once 1 a.m. hits.
Everyone else is comfy all snuggly in their bed and I'm still struggling to catch some zzz's. Then you go back to staring at your favorite place on the ceiling, you slowly die a little inside as you pray to yourself maybe soon it will be my time to fall asleep.
I wish they had college classes really late at night because I would probably do really well in them. For some reason, my school thought it was a great idea to give an insomniac all 8 a.m. classes and boy, was it miserable to get up every day. You show up walking like a zombie and chug an entire coffee because you think that it might help your tiredness, but it doesn't if anything it just makes you crash harder later.
Being an insomniac does have some beneficial qualities, though. You are able to make really long car trips through the night and you probably have some really good music that you can play. So, not only can you keep the person whose driving awake, you can also play some killer music that they have never heard before.
Since you aren't sleeping you have extra time to pick up hobbies you've always wanted to try. As long as you are a college student and won't bother your neighbor, I suggest you pick up a new instrument. It is a great way to fill up your time and who knows you might just figure out your hidden talent. By being an insomniac you learn a lot about yourself.
Now, I am in no way trying to convince you that you too, should become an insomniac because I would never wish that upon anyone. It is a terrible thing because you are on a completely different schedule than everyone else in the world.
Nevermind, the fact that it's not healthy for your body. No one can live off naps during the day and a few hours at night, if you can even fall asleep at night. I can promise you that the life of a nocturnal animal is not fun and I have been given the nickname of a sloth because of how slow I am. Your body needs sleep, so please seek further help if you too are becoming a sloth.
When you do finally get some sleep, I promise that it will be the best sleep you have ever had in your entire life. Goodluck to my fellow insomniacs and I shall see you at Starbucks while I grab my quick fix of caffeine for the day!
