For me, New Jersey is arguably the coolest place to live in the country. You are no more than an hour from the most beautiful beaches, breathtaking mountains, and the awe inspiring city of New York. You may be thinking to yourself, "How do I visit all of these cool places without breaking the bank?" Have no fear, I've created a list of the five most awesome Garden State attractions to visit that won't clean out your wallet.
1. Jenny Jump State Forest
Jenny Jump State Forest in Warren County is definitely one of the coolest places I've ever gone hiking. With stunning views and amazing terrain, Jenny Jump makes for an awesome day trip with family or friends. Over the summer my sisters and I along with our two friends drove to Jenny Jump State Forest in search of Fairly Low Cave, a massive cave on the coast of Ghost Lake. After an hour or so of hiking we finally found the hidden trail that led us to a massive cave that cut straight into the edge of a cliff. The view of the lake from the cave was stunning and worth the long drive and rigorous hike. It free to use the hiking trails and park as long as you use lots that are marked with a "State Forest" sign. I must warn travelers though, if you plan on hiking up on top of the cave it is VERY dangerous. There are cliffs that are extremely hard to maneuver at times so be very safe and only go during the daytime!
2. High Point State Park
High Point State Park isn't called "High Point" for no reason. This park is home to the highest point in New Jersey. You can enjoy extensive hiking trails and picnic areas that are all completely free to use! Climb up to the famous High Point clearing where you can see a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains below. This is definitely a great place to go if you love the outdoors and are trying to save.
3. Zimmerli Museum of Art
The Zimmerli Museum of Art is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey at Rutgers University. The museum showcases over 60,000 pieces in it's collection. The museum is constantly updating exhibitions as well as keeping up its permanent showcases. Admission to the museum is free it is open to the public 7 days a week. You can explore pieces from renowned local artists as well as student artwork as well. If you're looking for a cheap day trip or perhaps a less costly date idea, Zimmerli is a great option!
4. Public Beaches
New Jersey is known for its impressive coastline. What most people don't know is that select beaches along the Jersey Shore are complete free. Beaches in Atlantic City, Cape May Point State Park, and Island Beach State Park do not require a pass to enter and you can stay on the beach from dawn to dusk if you choose. These beaches are just as pretty and relaxing as all of the paid beaches down the shore, so pack up your beach chairs and find your favorite spot because this trip is easy and affordable!
5. Cape May County Zoo
The Cape May County Zoo in Cape May, New Jersey is home to 550 animals and over 250 species - and it's completely free! From exotic creates like lions, tigers, cheetahs, and monkeys to fox, owls, and bears the Cape May County Zoo is a fun and inexpensive day trip for children and adults alike.
