I put my key in the lock
and open the door.
The alarm starts beeping,
I press in the code
and said hello.
I walk through the house.
I am all alone
Well, kind of
I open the garage door,
the alarm chirps,
it’s just me I call out.
I check,
everything is secure.
I go back into the house and
wander through to the back door
heading for the pool.
The alarm chirps again.
Still just me I call out.
It’s twilight
I walk past the first light.
The motion sensor trips,
the light comes on,
Thank you, I say.
I walk to the faucet
The second light comes on
Thank you, I say, again
I turn on the water
to fill the pool.
I pull up a chair at the table
and relax to the sounds
of the running water and silence.
After a few moments
The second light turns off
Like it is supposed to do
I call out,
Well, look at you,
behaving as if you know how…
More and more,
I find myself
talking to electronic things.
Sometimes I praise.
Sometimes I scold.
Sometimes it’s just to pass the time.
More and more,
it seems to me
I’m really
just preparing
for the day,
they talk back…
