If you asked any student to describe college, I bet the one word they would choose to say would be "stressful." There is stress created in all aspects of college. Whether it's with classes, with roommates, studying, tests, grades, social life and so on, stress is always present. The list is endless — and that in and of itself is stressful. However, dwelling on the stress and choosing to not acknowledge the pleasant and fun things in life is just plain toxic. Positivity, although may seem difficult, is the key to enduring college and making the best out of the four years you have here.
Whenever you begin to feel stressed or overwhelmed, making a "to do list" can help tremendously. Being able to complete and cross off items will always bring a sense of calmness and achievement and can easily relieve any stress you may have. Learning time management and scheduling are also major factors in controlling stress and maintaining a balanced and positive life. I know I am always one to try and get involved in any way possible, placing importance on joining clubs and actively participating in my sorority. However, I would recommend to try to not to take on too heavy of a social schedule or be a part of too many clubs if you know that eventually it will become too much for you and lead to added stress in your life. Keep in mind the amount of work each of your classes require before making any commitments to clubs or Greek organizations (even though they are the best). Measuring the time you're able to use for social and extracurricular activities is the key to balancing your schedule and keeping your days stress free and positive.
A big chunk of the positivity in your life comes from the people you chose to surround yourself with. Your friends in college can have a major impact on you and your lifestyle in college. If you decide to hang around people who are negative and have zero motivation, chances are you will become more negative and lose your drive. The best way of maintaining a positive lifestyle is choosing to have friends that care about you as well as care for their future and have the motivation to be successful in college and life.
It's easy to let negativity dominate your life in school when you are constantly trying to maintain good grades and a social life while trying not to become overwhelmed by it all. However, if you surround yourself with friends that lift you up and focus more on what in your life is going right as opposed to what isn't, your college, and also life, experience will improve overall. School is as fun as you make it and keeping a positive mind and positive attitude are crucial parts to making the best out of your years here.
