I'm The Girl Who Never Had A Real Date To Prom

Hello! I am the girl who never had a real date to prom and that's okay.

When I was in the 10th grade, I was asked to prom by a guy who decided to take 2 girls instead of one. Imagine it; waking up early, excited as ever to start getting ready. Fake nails, having your hair done, spending 3 hours on your makeup, and then putting a dress on that you spend hours looking for. All of this leads to some guy you barely even like picking you up and telling you that he is also taking another girl to the prom. Your heart breaks. You go to the dance, ignore him, then go home and cry. The next thing you know, you're in college writing about your prom nightmare.

I have never really been the girl who had a boyfriend. Boys never paid attention to me. They still don't look at me. I can't even get a girl to look at me. I think that is what stings the most, but it is something you learn to live with. Every day is a struggle of wondering if I am good enough or ever will be. If not now, when?

Prom: Chapter 2. You are now in the 11th grade. Boys still don't look at you, or care to ask you to prom. You're just the obnoxious chubby girl who does her own thing. Third wheel is literally your middle name, but prom this year was a good one. No, you didn't need a boy in a fancy tux to pick you up and take you, your friends were by your side this year. Yeah, friends are probably the best way to go in a time like this, but you're still missing something critical; a partner to slow dance with. Imagine yourself wondering if you'll ever get that slow dance you've dreamed about since you were a little girl. Eventually, a slow song comes on and the environment becomes awkward. Grab your friends hand and swing your arms back and forth. Enjoy the moment and pretend you don't care because this is all you have.

Sometimes your friends mean the world to you. Sometimes they only stay for one year. Sometimes they last for a lifetime. No matter how long they stay, enjoy every moment with them. In my case, I went through to my senior year without these people. This would be another year without a date to prom - at least that is what I thought.

When people talk about their date who took them to prom, you usually hear all of the juicy and romantic details, but sometimes it isn't about that. Sometimes it is about a guy you don't even want to be romantically involved with.

Prom: Chapter 3. It's half-way through your senior year, and you just landed a job at the local water park. Suddenly you meet the guy best friend you never had while bumping into him at work. Everything you had ever wanted in a guy, except he is gay and there is no romantic attraction, whatsoever. A few months later and he is one of your best friends. You guys decide to take each other to prom because neither of you will have a date this year. Imagine this; waking up early to have your hair done, fake nails, 2-hour makeup session, and putting on the prettiest dress you have ever seen on you in your life. When you are finally ready, you meet up with him. Pictures are taken, dinner is consumed, and you are on your way to the dance. Selfies are taken in the car, and your favorite songs play. Arrive at the building, walk in, and dance the night away. People are looking at you as he twirls you around and you dance to your favorite song, but you don't care - you are with your best friend. Take him home, and then return to your house with a smile on your face and memories to never forget.

Of course, I never had the prom night every girl dreams of, but I was able to make the most out of the dances I was able to attend. Not every girl has a guy to take her by the hand and kiss her at the end of the night, and that never stopped me from having fun. We are all put into situations and given the chance to do what we want with them. You can make the most out of an opportunity or linger on what you never had. It is okay to go to prom without a fancy promposal or a real date.

I am the girl who never had a real prom date, and that is okay.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
