In recent years, sorority life has been labeled with many misconceptions due to circumstances that have occurred in many chapters all over the nation as well as fabricated and outrageous portrayals of sorority women in movies and televisions. This has led society to the lean towards the idea that sorority women are just a bunch of air-headed, promiscuous, and out of control "snobs."
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not what everyone perceives me to be and here's why:
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not paying for my friends. Sure I may have dues to pay every month but, at the end of the day, the bond and sisterhood I share with my sisters is priceless.
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not just a party girl. Most sorority women are perceived to be only one good thing—partying. This isn't the case, at all. We may know how to have a good time but we also balance school and give our time into helping others.
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not hazed. My chapter for one, has a zero tolerance for hazing. I do not participate nor condone any hazing whatsoever.
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not uneducated. My sisters take pride in high academic achievement. College can be tough at times but, a sister is always there to help you study and make sure you are able to do well in your classes. Not mention, It's always refreshing to see a familiar face in the library after long hours of studying.
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not uninvolved. A common misconception about sorority women is that they only do community service just because they are required to. This is not the case. When it it comes to helping our communities, us sorority woman are getting into the habit of doing good and many, like myself, enjoy donating our energy and time to give back
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not my untrue self. I'm my own unique individual. I do not let the cookie-cutter stereotype affect the individual I am. And most importantly, my sisters accept that.
I'm a sorority girl but I'm not only entitled to my sorority. I am involved many different interests, likes, and organizations. I am a open minded, independent woman and when I wear my letters it's to symbolize love I have for my sisters and the knowledge I have that they are always there with me—every step I take.
I'm proud to say I am apart of a wonderful group of women who continue to not only push me through my darkest days but inspire me each and everyday to be my very best. Because of my chapter, I have become a better woman. I have become more driven to reach my goals. I've continued to maintain a sense of positivity. I have allowed myself to carry my confidence with stride and most importantly—I have gained the most incredible people as my sisters through this wonderful journey.
I'm a sorority woman, and I'm proud.
