What It Means To Be An ILRie

The School of Industrial Labor Relations (ILR) at Cornell University was the world’s first -- and remains one of the only -- colleges to study issues in the workplace. According to Cornell University’s ILR School, “The ILR School is advancing the world of work through teaching, research and outreach. ILR's mission is to prepare leaders, inform national and international employment and labor policy, and improve working lives.”

Approximately 1000 undergraduate students and over 10,000 alumni have quite a unique college experience for several reasons:

1. Having to explain what ILR is to everyone.

Even though there are so many aspects of ILR, we don’t even fully understand it ourselves. For this reason, family gatherings can be our worst nightmares.

2. Practically living in Ives.

We ILRies spend a lot of time in Ives (and not just because most of our classes are there): cramming for prelims, finishing papers, researching, etc. Early mornings, late nights, whether it’s in the lounge, in one of the classrooms, or in Catherwood; we’ve all been there.

3. Having, at least, one class here a semester.

Whether it’s HR or OB, or both. Shout out to 305!

4. Knowing all the OSS staff on a first name basis and appreciating how helpful they all are.

Can’t forget Jennifer, Nicole and Monica. Thanks for all you do!

5. Having incredible professors, who have extensive knowledge and experience and are top of the line.

We may not always realize it since we’re usually drowning in reading and homework assigned by said professors, but we really do appreciate having you all to look up to. Thanks for never failing to inspire us.

6. Recognizing other ILRies, even though you may not know their names.

Unlike some other schools, we’re a very close-knit, relatively small community. For that reason, we can easily spot other ILRies, even outside of Ives and often feel some sort of connection to them, even though we may not know them.

7. “Being part of a community and it being a part of you.”

We may occasionally get caught up in the busyness of it all, but we have a passion for what we do and know this is where we belong. Love you ILR.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
