A Mother's Love

The bond between a mother and her daughter

A Mother's Love
Raquel McCabe

The bond between a mother and her daughter is sacred. I speak from experience when I say a mother is a daughter's very first, and truest friend. There is an unspoken closeness that is formed from the very beginning, and every relationship is different. Although I am always gracious of the bond I share with my own mother, lately I feel like I haven't given her enough praise for the impact she has made. Like all relationships, we surely have our fair share of arguments and meltdowns, and there have definitely been days where we thought we may never see eye-to-eye, but the more I get older, the better I've come to realize how selfless a mother's intentions truly are.

Below are reasons why a mother's love and guidance is irreplaceable:

1. No matter what, she is your #1 fan:

Whatever it was that I had my heart set on, my mother put her all into it as well. Whether it was showing up to my softball games on an exceptionally hot day, even though she knew I didn't really like to play but thought I did in the moment, or being in the front row of every dance recital and talent show (dancing along with every move to make sure I didn't mess up because I was nervous), she was there, wherever it was, with bells on.

2. She has seen you at your worst, and will never judge you for it:

From bad haircuts to major meltdowns, my mother has seen it all. In the moment, she may have been angry with me, but never once did I see her walk away from the problem without doing everything in her power to help me solve it.

3. She is the voice of reason (even when you don't want to hear it):

A mother is given the gift of experience so that she can try and instill the same wisdom she has earned in her children. There have been many times as a kid and young teenager when I didn't want to take my mother's advice. I would think, how would she know, as if she was never my age once. It wouldn't be until after the fact where I would realize that I should have listened to her before leaving the house without a coat in 30 degree weather.

4. She loves you for all that you are, and whoever you want to be:

I know I can speak for all daughters who can relate to this when I say:

Mom,

It is a beautiful thing to have someone to experience every milestone, achievement, bad day, good day, and everything else in between with. What a mother is able to teach her children is unlike anything else I've ever known. It is a true honor to be your daughter, and I thank you for simply being you!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
