I've made a habit of checking the news every morning. Call me old and weird, but I find it useful to see what is going on around the world each day. As of late, politics has headlined newsrooms across the nation, and as I've watched videos and read articles, my eyes have slowly been opened to the prejudice that has killed the Republican party.
It's a pretty well known opinion that the media isn't always right. They exaggerate, leave out key information, and jump to conclusions far too quickly. It's what grabs a reader's attention and keeps them interested, myself included. With a crucial election in November, it appears that the media isn't slowing down anytime soon. While I've grown slightly weary of the endless political drama, reading each article has given me a new perspective on who the media is supporting. It's also caused me to seriously question what the actual facts are at this point. Clinton is showing a decently large lead in national and state polls, but is she actually winning? What's true and what's just an amplification of biased support?
I personally believe that the media should be neutral when it comes to elections. If they're going to represent themselves nationally, facts should be stated clearly with no assumptions that may sway one to an individual side. This is unlikely to ever happen because drama is what makes the media. I recently read a headline that compared Trump and Clinton as "a reality show star and ultimate Washington insider" (cbsnews.com). Reading that without any background information, who would you be more likely to vote for as President? Go ahead, pick the Washington insider; it makes the most sense. But now look at her life, her past, and her scandals. Is the media actually picking favorites and siding with the Democrats?
It appears that they are. I have yet to read a prominent, public news article that supports the Republicans. If Hillary is actually leading in the polls like the media claims she is, I'm not surprised. If a large influential presence supports one nominee over the other, the chances of that person winning are incredibly large. Hillary will stay on the track to victory if our newspapers and published reports continue on the path of blatantly obvious support.
Donald Trump tells a mother to leave with her crying baby during the middle of a speech, and it makes front page headlines. Donald Trump speaks out to Colin Kapernick regarding his views on racial injustice, and it makes front page headlines. Hillary Clinton sends a mass amount of government emails via her private server, and the front page headlines assume the best of her. How can we as Americans stand for this much longer?
It seems ridiculous when you sit back and consider this information in front of you, but for an average reader, it's subtle. No mercy for Trump, no losses for Hillary, and I am sick to my stomach. Yes, Trump has his flaws too (we ALL do), but must the media make a big announcement of every little mistaken word he says?
They must. Why? Because they love drama, and Trump is a new candidate with little political experience and a big opinion for a changed America. The media takes advantage of this and uses it against him. As a firm believer in voting for the truth, it frustrates me and diminishes my hope for the future of America. How is it that we have come to such a point where even our "unbiased" news reporters are picking sides?
I don't understand it. I don't expect it to change.
God bless America.
