If Guy Bigs Acted Like Girl Bigs

It would not be as fun as I hoped.

If Guy Bigs Acted Like Girl Bigs

It is that time of year in the Greek system, Big and Little season. The current initiated members of the houses are analyzing the perfect fit for their companion and the freshman are excited to see who they are paired with. For those who do not know, a Big and Little in a fraternity or sorority is the pairing of two people who are usually pretty much the same person, and connect well. It is complicated to explain to those who do not know, but trust Greeks when they say it is important.

Having a Big and Little heightens the Greek system experience. You can make a best friend, you are both very close and there is always someone you feel comfortable to talk to about anything. The absolute best thing about having a big bro or sis, is knowing there is someone out there who is your match. It's like you went through match.com and found your other half. Additionally, as time progresses everyone else can see how great of a match you two are.

So how does one find that other half? Well for fraternities it is quite simple. We hangout with the guys in the house and find who we connect with the best until we know who we want to mentor. We then request to have a certain Little. When the results are revealed the Bigs find out a week before Littles do. Then...a week passes and a ceremony happens where everyone finds out who they are matched with. Nothing special happens during that week besides that.

Sororities' Big and Little reveals, while similar to fraternities, are also quite different. For a whole week they get their future Littles presents and put them on their desks without them knowing, write them cute notes and buy them clothes and other crap. If you ask me, getting a bunch of free stuff for a week would be fantastic. That is literally the college students dream, having other people give them stuff, it doesn't matter what it is. Continuously, out of the kindness of their hearts the sorority members go bankrupt buying and making stuff for their significant other until the day arrives. When reveal day arrives I make it a task to shut all windows to my house. On this day for about 20 minutes constant exclamations of excitement are heard when the freshmen find out who their Bigs are. When I first heard screams and didn't know what was happening, I immediately thought 70 sorority girls were getting mugged or stabbed.

So why are guys so lame when it comes to getting Bigs and Littles? I have always loved the idea of getting food or clothes for a week straight and having anxiety attacks every night due to being teased by my unknown Big's gifts. However, the more I thought about it the more I realized it might not go as well as I hope. So I imagined what it would be like if fraternity men acted like sorority women for Big and Little week in the following ways:

1. The gifts.

Gifts would probably consist of either extremely lazy buying and preparation or be horribly embarrassing. Guys do not know how to buy clothes for other guys, let alone themselves in general. After probably about 20 minutes of searching they would probably buy something as dumb as the Rabbit suit Ralphie had to wear in The Christmas Story. The biggest issue I have with gift giving is that I'm in college and have no money. By no money I mean I want to spend it on myself. Getting nice gifts is hard and expensive, and I already stress for 10 minutes about whether I should go to Red Bento or not.

2. The notes.

Most guy handwriting is awful. If I were to get a note on my desk from my future Big I would have to decipher it "National Treasure" style with some fruit, only to find out I got a snickers bar and a cute rhyme that exemplifies how excited my Big is to have me in the family. The notes would also probably turn into some sort of, "that's what she said," joke, simply showing guys are always young at heart.

3. The baking.

This is where the laziness comes into play. Fraternity guys do not want to take the time to bake cookies from scratch. That is so much effort that could be put to something else like lifting or eating good of our own. Personally, if I make food I intend to eat it. Odds are they will go to the grocery store, buy a box of cookies and put it on the little's desk with another illegible note.

4. Revealing day.

As I stated before girls scream of excitement for 20 minutes when they find out the news. Guys are not meant to scream over that kind of excitement. We scream when we pull of an awesome victory in intramurals or when our sports team has an amazing play. If fraternity guys screamed like sorority girls do, the testosterone levels in colleges would plummet. No man should be able to comfortably make a high pitch sound like that under most circumstances.

Getting Bigs and Littles is important to many in fraternities and sororities. No matter the path to finding out the news, the best part is having one. Personally, I would love if my Big surprised me with treats or a present. Knowing they would go out of their way to do that for me is an awesome feeling. However, that is not the case, which is fine because honestly, I would probably not want to do that for my Little - that is so much work.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
