If Your Parents Made Hunting A Family Tradition, You Know These 9 Things

All of my life I grew up in a family that cherished hunting. My grandpas, uncles, dad, and brother all hunt. I even wanted to get my hunting license at one point. Through generations my entire family has become educated on hunting, and have learned to appreciate it. However, when you grow up in a hunting family, there are some things you know all too well. Here are 9 of the things you'll know if you grew up in a hunting family.

1. It's more than just Thanksgiving weekend.

Not only do we celebrate Thanksgiving, but on Saturday the hunters in my family make a weekend of it. If you don't hunt, you better enjoy the family time on Thanksgiving because the next day they could be gone to gear up for the season.

2. Your phone gets blown up on opening day.

From snapchats of your brother bored in his tree stand to family group messages saying "good luck!" your phone will get blown up. You are also sure to see a lot of pictures on social media with others' lucky kill.

3. Opening day is a holiday.

Whether or not you live in a school district that has no school on this Monday, your family will skip school because it's opening day! This is the biggest day of the year for all hunters and is a pretty much unofficial holiday.

4. It doesn't end when rifle season does.

Rifle season is the biggest hunting season, but when your family is dedicated to hunting they'll hunt all year. They'll go archery hunting and trapping too.

5. Your freezer is filled with meat.

Whether your family is bagging a deer, turkey, or other animals, your freezer will be filled to the brim with meat for all year round.

6. You have taxidermy animals.

My dad has a deer head, my brother has a deer head skeleton, and my uncle has a bear rug. It's almost guaranteed that you will have at least one taxidermy animal in your house in your lifetime.

7. Camouflage and orange fill your closet.

Not only do we have clothes for the 4 seasons (spring, summer, winter, and fall), but we have attire for a whole other season: Hunting season.

8. Hunting shows are always on.

Any time you turn on the T.V. it was sure to be left on the outdoor or hunting channels. You also notice that the hunters of the family watch hunting shows right as they gear up for rifle season or watch it when they are missing it.

9. Nature is everything.

Whether or not you are a hunter in your family, you have gained an appreciation towards nature. You understand the beauty of it while loving to spend time in it. You feel at home when you're surrounded by nature.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
