No, no, no, not the person you’ll meet at the alter on your big day and who you’ll sleep beside for the rest of your life. The one person who is much more important than them, your best friend. She is the person who will stand to the left of you at the alter and the person who will be there to hold your hair on every major birthday. How do you know when you have found the Serna to your Blair, the Monica to your Rachel, and Leslie to your Anne?
1. You have no problem telling her like it is.
Honesty is always your guys’ best policy. You ground each other when the extra X chromosome starts telling you it’s okay to be crazy again or when your Instagram-selfie needs to be taken down.
2. People question your sexuality.
Your parents, “other friends” and random strangers would not be surprised if you two got married. That, and she has totally pretended to be your girlfriend when the creepy guy at the bar didn’t take the hint. She’s your go-to date for everything; you’re always matching in some way, and each other’s best accessory.
3. Verbal communication is not necessary for a conversation.
Not only can you have a conversation with strictly memes, videos and GIF's via text message, but you can also communicate to each other without words while together. Exchanging looks, hand motions, ect. you two know exactly what the other is thinking.
4. You are legitimately apart of their love life.
Your “bae” is their “bae.” You guys are a two for one deal and the next significant other is just going to have to get over it. That and half of their conversation with their crush is sent to you on a daily basis. Screenshots on screenshots on screenshots.
5. They get you in ways most people don’t.
Like when you say, “I saw my boyfriend today” they know that you are referring to the attractive stranger that you’ll probably never actually speak to. She knows when it is time for Dairy Queen fries and a blizzard and when it is time for Tequila.
6. Blackmail.
They have more ugly Snapchats of you then they know what to do with, and your 21st birthday was turned into permanent evidence. Every time you want to get mad at them you realize they know too much already.
7. They are your “everything” friend.
You have your swole-mates you spot on the squat rack, study buddy you exchange flashcards with, bad influence party girl friends you will probably end up in a holding cell with, and your therapist friend that you confide in. She is all of them in one, when she’s not out saving the world.
8. They know you inside and out.
Not only are your orders at Chipotle and Starbucks are committed to memory, but also they know all the things that make you, you. She knows your favorite movies, celebrity role models, and your deepest darkest secrets that you never have to worry about her spilling.
9. You share everything.
Nothing is off limits anymore, from colds to clothes. You literally don’t know whose stuff is who’s anymore. You’ll even share your food with her, and nobody else has that kind of luxury, not even your mom and she gave you life.
10. You’re proud of them.
Whether she got an A on her hardest exam or FINALLY broke up with the loser you’ve been holding your tongue about, you are always proud to call her your best friend and think of her accomplishments as your accomplishments. After all, you’re there to witness them most of them.
11. There are no secrets.
They know everything about you; your most embarrassing moment to your “how to get away with murder” plot. She could get you out in a game of “Never Have I Ever” faster than your dignity at that one trip, where you did that one thing, that one time.
12. You’re comfortable with them.
You say and do everything in a judgment free-zone. Pants are optional at your annual VS fashion show viewing and she tolerates your horrible dance moves on all elevated surfaces in public. And when “the song” comes on, she joins in as well, not matter the time or the place. Just because the rest of the universe is judging you, doesn’t mean she is.
13. You are protective of them.
In more ways than one too. Everyone knows to not talk trash about you to her because they will create World War III to defend your honor. Also, you’re slightly the jealous type. You cannot control your eye roll when someone else calls her their best friend.
14. Your enemy is my enemy.
You share the same enemies, even if you don’t exactly know why. If someone hurt your best friend, that’s all the reason you need to dislike the “boyfriend stealer” the horrible ex, or the Regina George in your life. However, you draw the line if she dislikes someone for no reason; tell her to get over it.
15. You’d do anything for them to be happy.
“Fine, but only because I love you” is a constantly repeated phrase in your daily dialogue. Her happiness is your happiness, so you both always go that extra mile for each other. Whether it’s making you a birthday cake when everyone else didn’t or going with you to that miserable party for moral support because your ex will be there.
16. You hate being apart.
Whenever you are reunited it’s a celebration, there’s lots of screaming and crying. You know each other’s class schedule to mentally prepare for the 50 minutes apart and you more than likely have plans to see each other over winter break because three weeks is just unfathomable.
17. Laughter, all the laughter.
There is literally never a dull moment because you make each other laugh constantly. Inside jokes are endless and always seem to get brought up at the most inappropriate times. No matter how bad a situation is, if it’s happening with them, it is going to be done with guaranteed laughter.
18. Social Media Crushes.
You send them your Instagram before you post it and tell her to “go look at my tweet” a few times a day. They are always good for a comment and a “like” to boost your ego as if you guys don’t do that enough already.
19. You have similar morals.
Even if you guys don’t have the same major and your future careers do not have anything to do with each other you still want basically the same things out of life. You bond over your similar beliefs and values in life. You have created a bond based on your deeper thoughts as well as drunken bathroom crying love confessionals.
20. You never really knew the meaning of friendship until you met her.
You respect, admire and adore her. The both of you treasure your bond and you know for a fact you will have each other forever. You can’t explain it in words, but she is your soul mate and you are more than thankful to have someone so amazing in your life.
