In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past two months, it is officially summer. If you’re anything like me, you would consider yourself to be less than outdoorsy. I consider camping to be staying at a sketchy Holiday Inn. I like nature, but I also like to keep it at an arms length, preferring to enjoy it from my lounge chair at the beach. To each her own, am I right?
Unfortunately, I have come to realize that if you say this to people who love the great outdoors, they tend to make fun of you. Since no one likes to be made fun of, I have come up with three crafty ways to trick people into thinking that I, too, am outdoorsy. Here are my three steps to success that will throw off even the most outdoorsy of gals.
Step One: Wear Patagonia
What better way to trick people into thinking you love the outdoors by wearing the most expensive camping gear out there? Patagonia is made to withstand all the elements and is a favorite of nature lovers everywhere. It’s also sustainably made, so you get bonus points for being environmentally conscious.
Step Two: Instagram Pictures of Nature
#nature
If you don’t post a picture of yourself in the great outdoors, were you even there? The answer is obviously, no. There are tons of different options to select from to make sure your love of nature is well known. Make sure you are throwing what you know in your favorite sorority shirt to get the perfect picture. You could also just snap a pic of the tree line and add a deep Robert Frost quote. Either way, you’re showing off how much you love nature and wish you could surround yourself with it every second of the day.
Step Three: Talk It Up
If you’re going to be in nature, you’re most likely going to find yourself doing some sort of outdoor activity. It could range anywhere from a casual 10 mile hike to white water kayaking. Regardless of what you end up doing in the great outdoors, make sure you tell everyone you know about your adventures outside. Talk up how you hiked through beautiful mountains for hours, even if you were on a paved trail for most of the time. No one needs to know that. You can even throw in a story about how you saw the cutest little deer while you were out there. Just make sure you make your story believable; no one likes a liar.
There you have it. These three steps will make you seem like a true nature lover, without making you feel like you’ve abandoned your principles. Good luck out there, I hear there are bugs.
*Writer's Note: After this article was written, I ventured out on a hike deep within the thicket. Unfortunately, while I was outside being outdoorsy, I got bit by a tick and am now being treated for Lyme Disease.
Nature with caution!!
