The first week of classes in college don't really feel like classes. Professors use the first week to explain their class to students and give important information regarding the course. It's also the time when students can add, drop, or swap classes before the semester really begins. Although many find "syllabus week" to be annoying and use it as an excuse to go out every night, it's actually very helpful to attend class. Here are some tips on how to make the most out of your school's syllabus week.
1. Save Every Syllabus You Get
Please don't rip up your syllabus. This may seem obvious, but so many people throw away their syllabus right after class. Keep that thing! It’s so much easier to check your syllabus for homework rather than frantically texting your friend the night before a big project is due.
2. Highlight Important Information
Syllabi are often wordy and long. Highlight important info that your professor talks about during the first class so you’ll be able to easily find it in the future. Don’t forget to write anything else important in the margins.
3. Write Important Dates In Your Planner
4. Go To Class
“It’s just syllabus week. You don’t need to go to class.”
We’ve all heard that one before. Don’t listen. It’s important to show up to class because not only will the professor outline the semester for you, you’ll also get a sense of the class which could lead you to dropping it or staying in it. The first days of class might be boring, but they’re necessary.
5. Ask Questions
Don’t be afraid to speak up if you’re unsure about something on the syllabus. Chances are that other people in your class are confused too and just don’t want to ask. It also shows the professor that you care and you’re paying attention.
6. Don’t Get Overwhelmed
It will seem very overwhelming at first, but I promise once you get all of your classes organized, everything will calm down. Take a deep breath and just relax.
