We live in a culture where complaining is commonplace and negativity is the new normal. However, this is not an ideal way to be living. Negative thinking can lead to creating problems that were never there in the first place and making the world seem much worse than it actually is. For those of you who are like me and experience chest pains whenever they're bombarded with negativity, here are just a few ways to cut the Debbie Downer attitude out of your life:
Mute negative people on social media
We've all experienced friends and family members who are great to hang out with in person, but are persistently negative on social media. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter have made it easier than ever to get rid of someone from your feed without the awkwardness of de-friending them. Just simply click on the person's profile and find the "unfollow" button for Facebook or "mute" for Twitter. Since the other user will not be notified of this, it won't ruin a relationship that you might want to preserve.
Focus on the good rather than the bad
We get so caught up in our daily busy routines that it's sometimes hard to take a step back and look at the big picture: wherever you currently are in life is leading you towards a path of bigger and better things. Not only is that something to be excited about in itself, but there's always at least a few good things going on in our lives. We just tend to ignore them whenever something bad happens. Next time you catch yourself complaining about not getting enough sleep or doing poorly on an assignment, look on the bright side instead: there's always another day to sleep in and that one assignment can easily be forgotten about if you work even harder on the next one.
Surround yourself with positive friends and/or family
You know the saying, "Misery loves company"? Well, positivity is just as infectious. Find positive people to be around and you'll be picking up their happy habits before long. Since happy-go-lucky individuals tend to be more outgoing and friendly, you'll most likely run across someone with that attitude in no time!
Release your stress through a healthy outlet
Not only does exercise release endorphins that cause you to feel happier, but it's a great source of relieving stress and aggression in a healthy manner. Another way to relieve stress is through artwork. Adult coloring books are all the rage these days and for a good reason (although I still prefer the kids'...they're so much cheaper): they're quite therapeutic and relaxing.
Take time out of each day to treat yourself
It doesn't matter how busy your schedule is; I can guarantee that you have at least five minutes to spare towards doing something that you enjoy, whether it involves watching YouTube videos, making a smoothie, taking a short walk, etc. Treating yourself at least once a day will make you feel better and focus on the little things in life that provide great pleasure.
