How To Keep a Positive Mindset During Stressful Life Events

Introduction

Stressful Life Events

Even when you’re looking forward to a big event in your life, it’s difficult to keep stress on the outside. Just the same, keeping a positive mindset is easier said than done. Fortunately, there are basic steps you can take to keep your head in the right space during various life events.

Here are five things you should consider doing the next time you find a major life event, such as your wedding day or a gender reveal party, closing it on you.

Take Time for Yourself

It doesn’t matter if it’s a wedding, bridal shower, gender reveal party, or another big event on your schedule, you can expect to feel some level of stress. That’s okay. What’s not okay is when this stress begins to change your life. It begins to bog you down both mentally and physically. That’s a problem on many fronts.

If you find yourself in this situation, consider the steps you can take to get back on track. One of the first things you should do is take time for yourself. When you decompress, you’ll come back stronger.

Rely on the Assistance of Others

The more stress you feel the more you’ll feel like you’re on your own. But that’s not the case. You should always rely on the assistance of others. This is even more so true if you have a stressful life event bogging you down.

Sticking with the wedding example, imagine that you have a long list of to-do items. You have to buy wedding sparklers, drop off a payment at your venue, and meet to finalize the details of your cake. And worse yet, you have to do all of this on the same day. Sure, you could cram all of this into your schedule but you’re better off relying on the assistance of friends and family. There are people who are willing to help. All you have to do is ask.

Don’t Push Yourself Too Hard

The more you push yourself the greater chance there is that you’ll lose your positive mindset. If that happens, you may begin to sour on the event that you’re planning for. That’s the worst position to be in, as you may end up regretting your decision. It’s okay to push yourself to a certain degree, but don’t go too far. Before you reach your limit, take a step back. Catch your breath, create a plan for the future, and move on from there.

Know When To Say “No”

This is one of the most difficult things to do, especially if you’re the type of person who likes to please everyone. But it’s okay to say no every now and again. Remember, you can’t please everyone. You can’t be all things to every person in your life. If you continually take on more than you can chew, it’ll catch up to you sooner rather than later. And when that happens, you can expect your stress level to reach new heights.

Look Toward the Future

No matter what you’re up against right now, you should always keep one eye on the future. You may be stressed and wondering what will come next, but there are always brighter days ahead. All of the work you put in today will pay off tomorrow. This is the type of mindset that will keep you pushing forward when you feel like giving up. As you focus on the here and now, you should also think about the future. This will show you that the situation you’re in right now will eventually make you a better person.

Final Thoughts

These are the types of things you can do to keep a positive mindset during stressful life events. Even if you only experiment with one of these, you’re likely to be happy with the end result. And when that happens, you’re in a better position to proceed in a clear and confident manner.

What steps do you take to maintain a positive mindset during stressful life events? Is there anything that has worked particularly well for you? Is there anything that hasn’t? How do you keep moving forward when you feel like there’s too much stress on your shoulders?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
