No matter how long you’ve been dating it’s always hard overcoming a break up. Whether it was one month or three years, that person meant a lot to you and you spent a lot of time devoted to them. Many of your friends will tell you to stay busy to keep your mind off of things. This is great advice but it’s not always easy. Overthinking is the biggest cause of unhappiness and the slowest route to recovery. But when you stimulate your mind towards something else you find yourself moving on faster than you expected.
Going through a recent breakup myself I've found myself feeling empowered and free to be who I really am. Being single is a great time to accomplish new goals and do things you never did before. For those of you going through a similar situation; lets tackle this mission together! Here are a few ideas to get yourself started:
1. Put Yourself Out There
There's no sense in sitting at home crying when you can be out with your friends or even making new ones. It may seen more appealing to curl up on your couch and eat ice cream but if your friends invite you to go out with them: DO IT. You'll feel much better afterwards! Plus if you're going to be drinking wine, you might as well be with good company.
2. Nurture Your Body
Everyone wants to get a super hot body after a break up to make their ex jealous, but why not do it for yourself instead? Fuel yourself with healthy food and exercise. Being active is a good way to keep busy but it's also very beneficial. It's a win-win for your mind and body.
3. Be Adventurous
You don't have to travel the world to be adventurous. Go for a hike, try a new restaurant, join a club. You don't have to break the bank to try new things. When you go outside your comfort zone you will feel more independent and you'll meet new people as well.
4. Create A Playlist
For those moments when you aren't being adventurous and you're just sitting at home your mind may start to wander back to those sad feelings. Create a playlist with up beat songs to get your mood back up. This will get your motivated and recollect your thoughts and goals.
5. Save Money
No more spending money on birthdays, Christmas, Valentines Day, anniversaries, etc...It's time to put your money towards yourself (or your puppy in my case!). Whether you save it for something you've always wanted or treat yourself to a massage; it's time to put your money where it belongs, in your pocket!
6. Date Yourself
You've spent the past three years getting to know your significant other and learning their likes and dislikes. You've may have even defined yourself by what your boyfriends goals and aspirations. Now it's time to find yourself again and learn more about what makes you, you. Take this opportunity to embrace your life and do things that you love!
The most important thing is to learn to love yourself and to take this time to better your mind and body. Your heart may ache now but when you gear your mind in a positive direction you realize you're better of alone then you were together.
