We live in a world that values materialistic items, however, the most rewarding and satisfying things tend not to be materialistic items. Lots of people spend their lives collecting items such as clothes, jewelry, cars, and electronics. Although these things can bring joy, typically our favorite memories aren’t of those things but of moments and people. Our experiences are what add richness to our lives, not materialistic items.
Change your spending habits
Whether it’s shopping, coffee, or alcohol, you probably have something that you spend way too much money and time on. By kicking that habit, you can save up that money for something else that will bring greater joy to your life. It's common people to spend more money on clothing because they want the brand name, but when companies know their brand is very popular; they jack the price up simply because their name is on the product. High price doesn’t necessarily mean better quality (I know that’s how you’re justifying that $100 fleece jacket). Instead look for sales, non-name brand items, and thrift stores!
Invest in travelling
Now that you have all this extra money from altering your spending habits, use it to travel! Traveling is a great investment to make to collect moments, but be smart about it. Do your research and find when and where it’s cheaper to fly. A lot of people tend to be flying during a certain period, for example spring break; airlines will raise their prices. Different days of the week are also generally cheaper to fly.
Don’t limit yourself to exotic places
Go visit that aunt you haven’t seen in eight years who lives a few hours away or take a day trip to a town in your state. You don’t have to always take extensive and expensive trips.
Think outside the… hotel
There are other options besides hotels when you travel. At many beaches it’s free or a small fee to camp out on the beach. Lots of cities have hostels where you can stay for a fraction of the price of a hotel.
Live in the moment
I know that sounds super cliché but actively choose to be present in the moment. Don’t just be there physically but mentally too. Put the phone, your worries, and responsibilities away while you’re spending time with loved ones. There are so many things you can discover from family members, friends, and strangers when you listen and engage.
Take care of yourself
You will be able to collect a lot more moments if you live a long, healthy life. Eat a balanced diet, exercise; take care of your mental health. These are all “no brainers” or things that people don’t think about because they are young. But really do it. If you have health complications, it’s a lot harder to do the things in life we enjoy
