Christmas Break Survival Guide

It's funny; when we're at school, we're dying to get home. By the end of break, many of us are dying to get back to school. For those of you who struggle through a month or more at home: here are some tips.

1. Get a job.

It sounds extremely boring, but it helps pass the time AND earn you money for school. I guarantee you I'll be working through the majority of my break. My stomach (and wallet) is gonna thank me because now I can afford more Taco Bell runs.

2. Read.

Even if you aren't an avid reader, buying a good book helps you escape sometimes. I just bought Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks. I almost never read, and I've blazed through this book in just a couple of days. Reading three books while at home gives you an excuse to stay home on nights when you're "just not feeling it."

3. Find a new hobby.

Last year, I asked my dad for a guitar for Christmas. I remember I spent hours googling the chords for my favorite songs. Another year, I went to the craft store and made a bunch of blankets for my friends and family. It really helped pass the time. But, if you ask any of my friends what their hobbies are over break, it most likely has to do with alcohol.

4. Do something you've always wanted to do.

Bunjee jump. Kiss a boy. Eat some carbs. Go to the gym. Go on a carriage ride. Make some waffles. ANYTHING. Anything at all that you've never done before and itching to do it... DO IT. Why not? You're bored out of your mind to the point where you're thinking about laying in bed all day binge watching Netflix or HULU or whatever you do. DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE AND CROSS STUFF OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST.

5. Catch up with old friends.

I love coming home for long periods of time because it gives me a chance to do everything. I can work, read, be with family, and see all my friends that I haven't seen since the summer.

6. And, of course, start a Netflix show.

When I want to recount my Christmas breaks, I remember which Netflix show I was watching. Christmas break 2013 I was watching 90210. Christmas break 2015 I was watching Friday Night Lights.

And if none of these things work for you, stop being so dramatic. It's three (or more) weeks where you have close to zero responsibilities. Enjoy it! Happy Holidays!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
