Before you read any further, please do not read this article until you have seen the movie "Room." This movie is way too good, and I don't want to spoil it for anyone. That being said, if you have seen "Room," this is how a movie about a room and a boy changed how I see the world.
I have never cried so hard at a movie as I did at "Room." Watching a child discover the world after being stuck in a room for his entire life is exciting and inspiring. Before entering the world, Jack thought Room was the entire world. When he first gets out and sees the world, he is awestruck and breathless by it. This movie and Jack made me look at the world completely differently. I realized I've lost that child-like outlook on life that Jack had.
"There's less time because the time has to be spread extra thin over all the places, like butter. so all the persons say "Hurry up! Let's get going! Pick up the pace! Finish up now!"
In "Room," Jack felt like time lasted forever because it was just him and Ma in "Room." But when he got to the rest of the world, he felt like time went by fast and everyone was in a rush. When I was a kid, I didn't worry about how much time I had or how many things I had to do. I just enjoyed playing outside until the sun set or I would stay up watching a favorite TV show. Sometimes I forget to stop and take a moment to live in the world and share the beauty of it.
"Ma and I have decided that because we don't know what we like, we get to try everything. There are so many things out here. And sometimes, it's scary, but that's okay because it's still just you and me."
"Room" taught me that it's OK to be afraid of the world, but I should never stop questioning it and learning more about it. "Room" seemed so big until he experienced the world. When Jack went back to "Room," it felt small. As I get older, the world seems bigger, yet smaller at the same time. I try more things and see more places. The world can be scary but Jack felt safe with Ma. I know that experiencing the world with people you love makes it less intimidating.
There is so much to enjoy in this world and so much to appreciate, but I think we get blinded by the mundane, everyday life. There is a lot of negativity, sadness, and fear in the world, but there is also a lot of beauty. We have to learn to look at it through the eyes of a child. The world is full of beautiful people, beautiful animals, and beautiful places. "Room" taught me to cherish the world and cherish being able to live in it. I think about that moment when Jack saw the world for the first time, and I think how awesome it would be if I saw the world like that every day. If I could wake up and it could be like I am seeing the world for the first time, would I see it all differently?
Ma: "You're gonna love it."
Jack: "What?"
Ma: "The world."
