Last week, my news feed on Facebook and Twitter feed was blasted with posts that simply said "Me too," and long explanations of why people were putting "me too" on their tweets and statuses, even on temporary profile pictures on Facebook. I was surprised and appalled at how many of my friends, family, and acquaintances had written: "me too."
For those who have been living in a bubble, "#MeToo" has been brought to the light by actress, Alyssa Milano, but was a movement long before that. The phrase is for women (and men, too) who have been sexually harassed or abused. Milano tweeted "If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet." She wanted to show people the "magnitude of the problem."
She really showed me. It was my whole news feed, women and men, not one cat or dog video in sight.
However, even with the large number of "me too" posts, I couldn't bring myself to post it. Being a victim of sexual harassment (along with many other people apparently), I could not do it. It brought back too many dreadful memories that I did not want to bring up. Many of my Facebook friends said it took a lot in them to post, but they posted it because their argument was that the harassers get away with it because people do not bring it up and hide it in shame.
It's not that I want the instigators to get away with it, but it's a private, suppressed memory, that some people may not want to bring up.
Honestly, the "me too" movement, although important, brought anxiety and bad memories back into my head.
Maybe it's not the healthiest thing to do, but that's just how some people cope.
I do want the movement to give rise to the issue, but just know, some survivors like me may be hidden in the dark because of the trauma it has caused.
I hope that the harassers see these posts and realize how their actions affected their victims, and I hope the public makes light of this problem to think of ways to prevent this and to educate people what sexually harassing and rape is.
If you posted, I give you all the credit in the world because you are so strong and brave to be posting about it to thousands of people to see. I guess that's the point, huh?
