We all have a groove that we developed over time. A groove is a way to do everyday things in a style that is uniquely you. It could be something like how you drive your car, to how you brush your teeth. It's how you get up in the morning and how you go to sleep at night. Anything can off-set the groove you have created. For example, break-ups, fights, new environments, new jobs or even something as simple as laziness (which is often what I fall victim to). Here I am to tell you, that even when you're in a seemingly, never-ending funk, I, the Groove Master, am here to show you how to get your groove back and make a comeback like the royalty you are.
1. Take A Much Needed Shower
If you are relying on the stench of your pits or the position of the moon to tell you when you last took a shower, Hunty, it is time. You need to wash of that funk, exfoliate and moisturize. Pamper yourself! Use a face mask, or an oatmeal bath. Make your skin glow and feel new. One of the best things to do when you feel out of yourself, is to make you a better version of yourself. Nurture your skin, care for your hair (which means washing, conditioning, and brush/combing). Don't think for one moment you don't deserve to feel like a god or goddess. There is nothing wrong with feeling like Outkast. So fresh and so clean.
2. Clean!
We have all probably heard that "clean house, clean mind" mantra from one or all of our parents. Of course, being the angst-y teens or young adults we are (or were!), we just thought it was a ruse to clean the house because they were tired of looking at our messy rooms. I have also spent my fair share trying to convince my mother it was self-expression and that it would be creative destruction to clean up my perfectly messy room. Yet, as annoying as it is, they were right. If you are relying on the piles of clothes on your floor to tell you what day of the week it is, I can tell you that the day of the week is laundry day. Get those dirty clothes out, and spray an air freshener. Old pizza and dirty socks isn't a smell you should get used to. Put on some fresh sheets, sweep or vacuum, open the windows and get rid of everything you don't need. It's about time!
3. "Treat Yo' Self"
If you have ever seen "Parks and Rec," you know this popular phrase. That's right, "Treat Yo Self." That new game you wanna try? Get it. That really cute lipstick you saw online? Buy it. You don't need a significant other, or a birthday/holiday to get gifts. Get them for yourself! The best part is, you know what you like better than anyone else! It is okay to take yourself on dates, or want to buy yourself things. You have to treat yourself the best you can, and don't let anyone treat you any less than you'd treat yourself. Also, for those of you with a bank account that's crying desperately, telling, no, begging you to stop, have no fear! Treat yourself to ice cream, or one of your favorite DVDs and popcorn. Take a mental health day, and get yourself to where you need to be. You don't have to spend that cold, hard cash you don't have. Just make sure not to fall into a habit of these breaks, or you can fall right back to square one.
4. Work, Work, Work , Work, Work, Work Out
I am not going to sit here and let you think I am a fitness wizard, because I assure you, I'm not. I love lazing out, eating pizza and moving as minimal as I can just as much as the next person. Yet again, science has to come in and kick our butt and prove how exercising can make you feel great. It is sad, but it is true. Exercise releases those happy endorphins and you make you feel great! Now, I'm not saying go try out for Tough Mudder, or run a 15k every morning, but going on walks or jogs can make you feel pretty great. Eating well also goes hand in hand.
5. Leave Your Dwelling!!!
Leave your room! Leave your home! Get outside and enjoy the company of others. I'm talking, if you shave or wax, do it. You haven't used that new palette yet? Use it. Just found a cool hairstyle? Try it. Wear your favorite outfit and go out for a night on the town with your best of friends! If that's not your style, go out and enjoy nature for crying out loud. Hug some trees and kiss some frogs! but you need a fresh scenery, and fresh air. Stop coping up in your little cocoon and binging on Hulu or Netflix or whatever your poison is. The big image is to be free! Flutterby, Butterfly.
Loosing your groove can sometimes be inevitable. We are human! Things happen, but we can't just let them happen and loose ourselves within these tough times. Your health is the most important thing to you, and if you feel like you need help, don't be afraid to reach out to those around you. There are always people willing to grab your hand. It doesn't always happen overnight, and it can be a long process to get yourself feeling like you once were, and sometimes we don't ever feel the same again, but there is no reason to be scared. Change can be good, and as long as we don't take any crap lying down, and work hard, we can start improving our life and start becoming the person we want to be.
