Over the years I have been called a spaz. I mainly get called a spaz by my parents so it’s not a big deal and it is kind of a family joke in the house. Through high school I used to stress myself out all the time which would lead me to spaz out. I soon realized through the years that I would stress myself out about the smallest things. I also realized that people fed off of my energy which tended to make other people stress out as well. Over the past two years I have learned to deal with stress and overcome it through sports, regular day activities, and I have learned from other people. Here are some ways I deal with stress.
1. Think Of Other Times
When I am really stressed out about something and I think that something is going to go wrong in the near future I think about another time where I was stressed out and everything worked out fine. Most people who stress out about the small things tend to focus on only the stress part of that particular instance. However, most of the things you were stressed out about before would usually end up working out fine. So instead of remembering how stressed you were, remember the aftermath. The other day I started to stress out and I remembered when I was stressed about not being able to play my freshmen year of college because of an injury I had. I then remember he happiness it brought me when I ended up being able to play and it reminded me that everything will end up working out some way or another.
2. Everything Doesn’t Happen For A Reason
A lot of people believe that everything happens for a reason. Well, I think that is a bunch of crap and it’s just words people say to make themselves feel better that something bad went wrong. Well I don’t want to feel better, I want to be better. So I always remind myself when I get stressed that even though something happened there is always a way out of it or there is a solution to the stress. I don’t want to tell myself lies like, everything happens for a reason, because then I stress myself out about trying to figure out why something happened.
3. Learn How To Control Stress Attacks
Everyone has a different way of controlling their emotions. The solution is to not just try to control your emotions but also figure out the difference between the good and the bad emotions. As well as figure out what will positively affect your stress attacks and what will negatively control your stress attacks. Thinking about someone or something that made you happy and sad at one point will not help you. When I am hit with a stress attack I have to think of something that has always and will always keep me happy. It could be a summer day in your life, a person that you always respected, or even just your family dog. Whatever it is you have to make sure that you stay focused on that rather than working yourself up for nothing.
These are just a few of the things I do to not spaz myself out. I think my generation especially puts too much weight on our shoulders. There is a fine line between over working yourself and holding yourself to a higher standard. Stressing out about holding yourself to a higher standard isn’t going to help you in the long run at all.
