How Dank Memes Saved My Relationship
The Blended Fun

What commonalities does Bernie Sanders, Instagram and childhood shows have? The creation of memes and the increasing recent popularity. For those who lack basic internet pop culture knowledge, a meme is a comic created in inspiration of funny circumstances. This whole cartoon started basically out of nowhere and flooded the internet masses. The etymology of memes has been created of hilarious images of famous people such as Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan and our own POTUS Barack Obama. This phenomenon started around 2010, the most popular memes were examples like:

I think it was just love at first meme. My relationship has been all meme-related since the beginning. I don’t quite remember the meme I sent, but the reaction was, “Wow, you are so hilarious”. Which is funny considering that my significant other said it with a straight face. It is odd to say that an internet-created subculture was the reason my relationship is as strong as it is today. My own millennial ideals have been questioned. They have always been, "Send a meme everyday, be happy". I think that’s the reason the arguing in my relationship is so minimal. Because we find so many similarities in the meme stash we both have. I think our relationship hit such a level of comfort that being secretive of things is just not a thing anymore.

We at some point were in shambles. The relationship was crumbling down and memes were the glue that mends all wounds. Because of pop culture, my relationship improved and I am grateful for the creator of memes. The weird thing is that people go to counseling for their relationship problems. I don't shame people for it, I just want them to see how funny and how therapeutic sending memes to your partner is. There are some cases where memes being so dank that they ruin a relationship with a person. Which is painful for me to see because I understand there are many problematic memes. But when you see the positive, laugh-provoking memes the whole perspective changes. I think that meme- sending became sort of like an addiction to us.

To conclude, the commonality of meme sending is such a rising topic. Even though some people believe the meme culture is dying, it is quite alive. The whole culture is dividing into other sub-cultures and it is truly a joy. Many people are affected positively every day because of these very own memes. It is such a jolt of energy and conversation every time a meme gets sent.

I am a true testimonial: Memes saved my relationship, and they should save yours too!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
