The one thing all writers dread most. It's definitely scarier than any monster I know of. Writer's block. Once you get into a slump it’s hard to get and get creativity going again. Below are some things do to get out of writer's block and try and prevent it. Hopefully it can help other writers in the same situation.
One way to beat writer's block is to just write. Sometimes I feel like I have writers block because I think all of my ideas are terrible. So if you have a ton of ideas in your head write them down. A few of them you might be able to use. By writing down even the silliest of things you will be able to be inspired by them and find something you do want to write about. Keep all of your ideas in a notebook or app on your phone so that in the future you can look back at them and get ideas from old prompts.
Another really good tactic is to write as you listen to music. Most people think of situations, stories, or their own music videos when listening to music. Don’t let that creative energy go to waste! Again find somewhere to write down whatever you come up with as you listen. If your mind goes blank (it happens to the best of us) force yourself to write a story that goes along with the lyrics. Listening to instrumentals or classical could give you ideas for an epic battle or put together a movie playlist and write the movie out from there.
Write every day. My favorite way of thinking bout writing is that is a muscle you have to exercise like everything else. Find something to write about. Whether it be in a journal or diary about how your day went or a research paper for a class, the more you write the easier ideas will come to you. And if you don’t know what write about look through the news and choose something from there. There is plenty of unjust things going on today. Ranting will get you writing and you may go on and on but when you write, just to write, that does not matter. The Most important aspect is that you are writing.
If all else fails and writer's block looks like it has won, look up writing prompts. There are all kinds of prompts out on the internet. You can find any from sci-fi to news prompts. Starting with some else’s idea is a good way to start a whole novel. Just having that little seed of imagination is the start of a whole garden. Having access to other people’s ideas is a great because it allows you to see points of view other than your own. As long as you do not use that person’s entire work it is an amazing way to start writing. A great prompt idea website is linked here. And one for only non-fiction is here. Oh and I almost forgot a creativity-inspiring prompt is here.
Writer's block is the worst thing, besides a computer dying, or their trusty journal going missing, that could ever happen to a writer. Don’t let it happen to you. The best way to beat writer's block is to write. I cannot stress that enough. If that doesn’t work ask people around you or the internet. If you put work in writer's block will never win. If noting else comes to mind, just write about how you don't know what to write about.
