"Hey how are you?" "I'm good, just busy."
How many times has this been your conversation?
Is it honest? Are you actually good? Are you actually busy? Or are you giving the pretense that has be drilled into our heads through this superficial fast paced society?
"I'm good" could actually mean "I'm good," but too often its a just a word that matches the fake smile we parade around. How do you explain to someone that you're not okay? Come on, we all know that those crazy happy awe-inspiring people are always okay. If you want to be successful at life, you can't have time for bad days, right?
"Just busy" could actually mean "just busy," but even if we weren't, wouldn't we still be inclined to claim to be? It's easier to hide behind the facade of a crazy lifestyle than explain that you've had a slow calm week or even just an average week. People can only be successful if they become this crazy on-task 24/7 working machine. Successful people don't have extra time right?
Right.
But wait.
What if we're wrong?
"Just busy" could become an actual explanation of why you're [blank]. You can't run a life constantly busy for long. Those slow, calm, run-of-the-mill weeks are what help rejuvenate you from the previous busy week, and what helps you prepare for the next. You can be successful at a different pace than "busy" right?
"I'm good" could become an actual description of how you are. You can't connect with people if you're living a lie, pretending to always be good. You can be good or bad, amazing or awful. You don't have to live in a monochromatic state of "good." Emotions are what make us human right?
We live in this world of booming industry and fast paced society. It's sad that this environment has decayed our abilities for basic, truthful conversation. For some reason we have decided that we must present this glorified image of ourselves to everyone around us. Busy makes us sound important, and good makes us seem invincible to life. Fake it till you make it amiright?
No, I'm not right.
Living behind a seemingly impenetrable facade causes you to lose sight of your real life and real emotions. While this might seem ideal, believe me, its not. One day the strain will take its toll, and suddenly the facade you spent so much time and energy creating is gone, torn to pieces, and all that's left is an exposed, raw, terrified individual. It's okay to be something besides good, and its okay to not be busy.
You can be better or worse than a stereotypical answer, and it's okay either way.
So now, please tell me, how are you?
