Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Robin Wright) Underwood are like the Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this riveting corrupt political show. The first and second seasons had us at the edge of our seats as we watched the uprising of a political devil make his way to become the President of the United States of America. Season three was a bit "slow" some would say, but it was more of a focus on character development. In season four, the Underwood’s reveal just how powerful they are, not only in their careers but in their marriage as well. Frank should be considered one of the greatest villains of all time because he sets a plan, he never gets caught and he’s married to a woman that is just as vicious as he is.
In season one, the writers get to the point quickly with the plot in this series. The viewers are able to get a good understanding as to why Frank is passionate about becoming the next president. Frank is vehemently vengeful like a shark underwater about to come in for the kill, and whoever is above the water doesn’t even see it coming. His plan all started when he was promised the position of Secretary of State, but later found out that he was passed over and the position was going to Senator Michael Kern. Informing his wife of the disappointing news later that night, he calmly expressed how he felt. She reminds him of his character, that he is too ruthless, cruel and unmerciful and he needs to do something about it. After their conversation he turns over the coffee table and the objects are scattered to floor. Flipping over the coffee table is nothing compared to how Frank was going to flip over the White House.
Frank proves his cleverness in season one, but in the beginning of the second season he also proves he is not the one to mess with. Anyone that is out to get him will suffer serious consequences. A journalist named Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara) is murdered by Frank because she starts putting pieces together in the death of Peter Russo (Corey Stoll), a young representative of south Philly. What makes his murder technique so clever? It’s because he was able to do it without being seen. Frank causes Zoe and Peter’s deaths, but Frank is able to make them look like suicides.
Lastly, the reason why Frank Underwood is so successful at being one the greatest villains of all time is because he’s married to one. When it comes to Frank and Claire’s marriage, Claire proves that she is the Alpha in the relationship. In season four, the viewers get to see a side of Claire they have never seen before. Throughout the series we’ve seen her grow and become covetous for power. Working for an environmental organization was a cover up to make her and her husband seem warmhearted. As soon as Frank starts to move up the ladder, she rises along with him. She first shows how bitter she can be in season one, when she decides to fire half of her staff. But in season four, she becomes cruel to her husband and turns her back on him by defeating a bill. Finally, when Frank finds his back against a wall with exposing the truth of betrayal against the former President Garret Walker (Michel Gill), Claire is able to knock the wall down by coming up with the most evil plan yet. The fourth season ends with Frank and Claire sitting side by side together as they watch the ruthless killing of a captured American citizen. As the rest of the people in the room express their sadness of what took place on live camera, the Underwood’s showed no emotion, sorrow or fear. Frank ends with these last words, “We don’t submit to terror, we make the terror.”
