After five years and two albums with Atlantic Records, Cody Simpson is finally "free." The 18-year-old pop heartthrob has just released his first independent record on his own label called Coast House, and this album is far from anything he has put out before. There is no tragic backstory as to why he left Atlantic Records, and in just about every interview, Cody states that he is just doing what he wants to do and what he feels is right for him. In the long run, I feel like living this way is a goal everyone of us has, and we should totally respect that.
As if his drive and desire to start his own label and produce the music he and his fans will love weren't enough, Cody Simpson's new album, "Free," is also musically astounding. The songs are all written by Cody himself with some help from John Mayer and other artists, such as G Love, who accompany him on the album. Each song has a taste of acoustic rock mixed with reggae mixed with blues. How it all blends together so beautifully, I will never know.
Prior to the album's release on July 10, 2015, Cody released a few singles, such as "Flower" and "New Problems." If you ask me, these are some of the more mainstream tracks on the album. You still get a good feel for Cody's new style and sound, but it's nothing compared to other single-release tracks like "Wilderness," which is completely stripped with it's raw, acoustic sound and softer vocals.
Each and every song on this album has something that the others do not. Whether it be the overall sound, the lyrics, or something else that makes it so, this album is truly special. It can take you anywhere from the beach to random road trips to just sitting in your room relaxing. These are only some of the reasons that this album could be the true hit of summer 2015.
